Johannesburg, South Africa – In a highly anticipated visit to the country, Grimace, the famed McDonald’s purple mascot was greeted with thunderous applaud by hundreds of adoring fans upon arrival at the OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday, November 2.

The visit marks yet another exciting milestone for the fast-food chain’s customers in nearly 30 years of its existence in South Africa. Grimace will this week kick off over a month-long nationwide tour that promises to blend fun with a uniquely South African flavour.

The soft, two-armed purple blob has been at the heart of popular culture for decades, inspiring plenty of “Grimace lore” as fans speculated about his mysterious origins.

An embodiment of the restaurant’s most coveted summer treats, the tasty purple milkshake, Grimace’s warm and quirky charm has made him a favourite across the globe, and he’s ready to embrace everything South Africa has to offer.

Five special appearances Grimace will make during the tour:

  1. During his visit, the internet’s beloved furry friend will immerse himself in Mzansi’s vibrant culture – dance and music to be specific – and Saturday was no different as he shook it off with some serious dance moves, showing the crowds he’s up to speed with some of the on-trend Amapiano moves.
  2. Hwill also be exploring South Africa’s buzzing cityscapes, taking in the country’s stunning natural beauty.
  3. As McDonald’s SA marketing director, Sechaba Motsieloa indicated, in over a month, “till mid-December”, Grimace will be making special appearances at select McDonald’s restaurants across South Africa’s nine provinces, with the next stop on the day (Saturday) – from OR Tambo Airport – being the Boksburg Macdonald’s in the East Rand. Families will have the chance to meet him in person, snap photos, and create lasting memories.
  4. Fans can also look forward to a new menu addition, the famous purple Grimace Shake, which has already taken the world by storm. Exclusive Grimace merchandise will be available through the MyM App as a limited time offer, allowing fans to bring home a piece of the magic.
  5. Grimace’s visit coincides with another exciting development, the expansion of ‘Mobile Order Pay’. Customers can now order ahead for their favourite meals across the country. This is available through the food-chain’s App in a variety of convenient options: curbside pickup, drive-thru, and dine-in.

South Africans can follow Grimace’s journey across the country on his social media platforms, including McDonald’s South Africa (@McDonalds_SA on X) for updates on his schedule and upcoming events.
