Top South African bank leads the way with efficient, eco-friendly e-SIMs

In a move that will make a big difference for our planet, FNB Connect to introduces embedded SIM cards (eSIMs) across its product suite amid increasing demand for the service.

FNB Connect will now offer both its retail and commercial customers the ability to take up embedded SIM cards (eSIMs) across its product suite amid increasing demand for the service.

“We’ve seen an overwhelming number of our retail and commercial banking customers connect to the FNB App through e-SIM-ready devices,” Sashin Sookroo, CEO of FNB Connect said, adding: “In fact, the number of FNB customers with e-SIM enabled smartphones has grown by 169% in the past three years.

Moreover, the banking institution expects these numbers to grow further as more customers sign up for eSIM powered devices.

How FNB is using green technology to accelerate net-zero ambition

The introduction of FNB Connect’s eSIMs will not only enhance the digital experience for customers by speeding up time between sign up and activation – ensuring turnaround time in under just three minutes. By digitising the card process, the bank significantly slashes the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing and transporting physical SIM cards.

A 2022 study published by Statista showed that the adoption of eSIM technology leads to 46% reduction in carbon emissions – compared to physical sim. This is another way consumers and businesses alike can incorporate eco-friendly practices in their daily lives and live more sustainably.

“In line with FNB’s aspiration to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 in our South African operations, we’re excited to see how this move will help us and our customers to minimise our environmental impact while reducing plastic waste,” added Sookroo.

A true game changer that will enable customers to port their numbers more easily, the bank is giving qualifying customers an extra 100GB free per month for six months.
