Randburg – Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, has issued a stern warning regarding the recent “Matric for Klippa” scandal.
The controversy involves a third-party company, Edumarks, allegedly giving matriculants early access to their Matric Class of 2024 results for a fee of R100.
Speaking at the MTN Innovation Centre in Randburg at the ministrial breakfast with SA’sbmatric top achievers, Minister Gwarube emphasised that there will be accountability for any department officials found complicit in the breach. “If the breach comes from the DBE side, we will be investigating, and consequence management will follow,” she stated.
Although the specifics of these consequences remain unclear, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has maintained that the breach is more likely due to cybercrime rather than internal misconduct.
To address the breach, the department has enlisted the State Security Agency (SSA) and the Hawks. Minister Gwarube explained that due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, the department had to maintain silence for 48 hours. According to officials, the investigation is now at an advanced stage, and further updates are expected soon.
