Soweto, Gauteng – Gogo Maweni, real name Makgotso Lee-Anne Mofokeng, appeared in court following her arrest on Sunday on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and alleged involvement in five unresolved murder cases.
During the bail hearing, the prosecution argued that the popular is high profile and access to financial resources made her a flight risk. The State Prosexutor also presented evidence suggesting she had previously attempted to intimidate witnesses in the assault case.
“She has the means and the motive to disappear,” argued Advocate Sarah Mokoena, “and her previous actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the justice system.”
Gogo Maweni’s defense team vehemently denied these claims, arguing that she was a respected member of the community with strong ties to South Africa. They emphasised her willingness to cooperate with the investigation and adhere to any bail conditions imposed by the court.
“Makgotso Lee-Ann Mofokeng is a pillar of her community, a businesswoman, and a mother,” stated Defense Attorney Thomas Masemola. “These accusations are baseless and designed to tarnish her reputation.”
Despite the defense’s arguments, Magistrate Khaye ultimately ruled against granting bail. He stated that the seriousness of the charges, coupled with the concerns raised by the prosecution, warranted keeping Gogo Maweni in custody.
“The accused faces very serious charges, including potential involvement in multiple murders,” Magistrate Khaye said. “There is a real risk that she may attempt to flee the country or interfere with witnesses if released on bail.”
The case has been postponed to January 27, 2025 for a formal bail application. Gogo Maweni will remain in custody until then.
