April SASSA pension grants roll out — why some recipients won’t be paid?

Thousands of older persons face potential suspensions as the agency enforces strict 2026/2027 verification rules.

The South African Social Security Agency has officially begun its first payment cycle of the new financial year, with the SASSA April 2026 payment dates confirming that Older Persons Grants are being disbursed this Thursday, April 2, 2026.

While the rollout brings much-needed relief to millions, the agency has issued a stark warning: not all beneficiaries will be paid as stricter verification measures take effect nationwide.

In a statement released on April 1, SASSA said it is intensifying its compliance processes to ensure accuracy and fairness in grant distribution.

“Social grant reviews and life certification are critical in confirming continued eligibility, preventing payments to deceased individuals or ineligible beneficiaries, and detecting fraud.”

Strict verification: The “life certification” hurdle

At the centre of the disruption is SASSA’s ongoing review process, which has already seen thousands of grants flagged. As previously reported in why thousands of grants are being reviewed or stopped, beneficiaries who fail to comply with verification requirements risk immediate suspension.

The agency emphasised that these checks are not optional:

“These processes help protect public funds, maintain the integrity of the social assistance system, and ensure that support is directed to those who genuinely qualify.”

Key reasons for non-payment this week include:

  • Unresolved review notices: Failure to respond within the required timeframe
  • Income threshold breaches: Automated checks flagging undisclosed income or improved financial status, beyond the confirmed 2026 increased grant thresholds
  • Biometric or life certification failures: Beneficiaries who have not verified their identity or status under the new SASSA grant model

SASSA further warned that non-compliance carries serious consequences:

“Beneficiaries who fail to comply with review or life certification requirements may have their grants suspended, with continued non-compliance potentially resulting in the lapsing of grants.”

April 2026 payment schedule and increases

For beneficiaries who remain compliant, payments will proceed according to the official schedule published by the SASSA 2026–2027 social grant payment schedule.

The updated grant amounts for April are:

  • Older Persons Grant: R2,400 (up by R80)
  • War Veterans Grant: R2,420
  • Disability Grant: R2,400 (paid April 7)
  • Child Support Grant: R580 (paid April 8)

The staggered system remains in place to reduce congestion and ensure smoother distribution across the country.

What to do if your grant was not paid

SASSA has urged beneficiaries whose payments do not reflect to act immediately rather than wait.

“Beneficiaries whose grants are not paid on these dates [are urged] to visit their nearest office immediately.”

Affected individuals can also verify their status online via the official SASSA portal or update their details in person.

The agency also reminded beneficiaries of their legal obligations under the Social Assistance Act:

“While a beneficiary may have qualified at the time of application, changes in circumstances must be reported to SASSA to ensure continued eligibility.”

A system under tighter control

SASSA maintains that these measures are necessary to safeguard the long-term sustainability of the country’s social assistance system.

“These efforts are aimed at preserving the sustainability of the social assistance system and ensuring that support reaches those who need it most.”

For affected pensioners, however, the message is immediate and clear: no verification, no payment.
