A Beemer for progressive tastebuds – just not mine!

A muscular beast, with styling seemingly inspired by Mercedes CLA, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupé might not appeal to the traditional brand (Beemer) enthusiasts who still prefer rear over front wheel-drive. But for average buyers looking for a comfortable, attractive commute, it sure won't disappoint - that's if unlike myself you aren't bothered about which wheels drive it - writes Prashirwin Naidu.

The BMW 218i Gran Coupé M Sport is a particularly intriguing specimen. Firstly, it’s a muscular beast, with styling seemingly inspired by its competitor, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. It also has the Audi A3 sedan on its radar.

Pictures don’t do justice. It is more attractive in metal. But then beauty is in the eye of the wallet holder. Some might spot elements lifted from the 8-Series. There are apparent dials, too, from the iconic 1-Series on which it is based. Understandably, one plus one makes two. But there’s more space than the cramped 1-Series. Even the luggage capacity is relatively generous, 420 litres. For sure, you can fit much more in this vehicle.

Of course, the most critical question, apart from the second one, concerns ride quality. It is impressive and has an almost sporty feel, leaving both passenger and driver relatively dizzy with joy.

The BMW 218i Gran Coupé is impressive and has an almost sporty feel.

The 2-Series Gran Coupé starts at R655,000. But, like most premium German brands, the base model is pretty basic. You want the frills; expect to splash the cash. For the M version of the two-series Gran Coupé, you’ll be paying  300k more in features and power, tipping it just over a million rand. This made it one of the priciest entry-level luxury cars on the market. It is a tough decision to make as there are other better alternatives with a more significant presence, like the Mercedes Benz C200  that starts from R888, 000, or you can opt for the diesel variant, which is R950, 650. We all know Mercedes is the most elegant brand out there. However, the Audi A3 Sedan could be the next call if that doesn’t capture your eye, which is priced at R605, 300. Ultimately, it is about personal choice – and whether it matches your budget.

BMW recently announced it had moved away from its rear-wheel drive for compact cars, going the front-wheel route or all-wheel drive in some cases. The jury will remain on what this means for the driving experience. Purists may feel this lessens the driving experience.

Another question for motoring enthusiasts is what’s to come from these mild-mannered motor cars? More heated seats? WIFI? Trends and hype? What makes them a grunt above the rest?

An absolute eye-catcher, the 2 Series Gran Coupé gets more sportier with sleek rear tail lamp end and extra tinted glass.

The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupé might not appeal to the traditional brand enthusiasts – but that demographic is shrinking. The average buyer looking for a comfortable, attractive commute with a premium cachet will not be disappointed.

My Dad fondly remembers the legendary now late former City Press motoring scribe Steve Dlamini, who used to love the brand, always saying that the only vehicle better than a BMW is another Beemer. I’m still working out the wheat from the chaff regarding the best cars on the market. Fair and reasonable value for money, the Gran Coupe is indeed grand.

Agree; it’s a fine pair of wheels. But not for me!
