Absa leads the charge for gender parity in sport with record-breaking 2025 Sunshine Ladies Tour

Johannesburg, South Africa – As the 2025 Sunshine Ladies Tour tees off with a historic R20 million prize pool and live SuperSport coverage, the Absa Ladies Invitational (March 27-29, 2025) stands at the forefront of Absa’s mission to redefine opportunities for women in sport.

This flagship event, hosted at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club, is more than a tournament—it’s a catalyst for systemic change in a historically male-dominated arena.

“The Absa Ladies Invitational is not just about competition—it’s about rewriting the narrative,” declares Jabulile Nsibanyoni, head of sponsorships at Absa Group.

“Across various sporting disciplines, from She Untamed to the Absa Cape Epic, we are breaking barriers for women in sport. Our commitment extends beyond sponsorship—we are investing in platforms that create opportunities for women to thrive, compete, and lead.”

The Invitational anchors a landmark Sunshine Ladies Tour schedule, which encompasses:

  • Platinum Ladies Open, Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate: March 2025 13-17:
  • Absa Ladies Invitational, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club: March 2025 27-29:
  • Joburg Ladies Open, Modderfontein Golf Club: April 3-6, 202
  • Investec SA Women’s Open, Erinvale Golf Club: April 2025 10-13

With live broadcasting elevating visibility for South Africa’s elite female golfers, the Tour underscores Absa’s pledge to ensure “female athletes receive the recognition, resources, and support they deserve.”

Broader commitment to women’s empowerment

While the Ladies Invitational drives momentum in golf, Absa’s support for women in sport spans disciplines. The bank’s #SheUntamed mountain biking initiative—which prepares women for the Absa Cape Epic and has surged participation from 36 riders in 2019 to 176 in 2024—stands as a testament to its transformative impact. This growth mirrors Absa’s broader mission: breaking barriers and fostering equity across sports.

Tina Venter, Absa Executive for Marketing Operations, notes: “Absa is committed to leading the charge in empowering women in cycling. #SheUntamed goes beyond inclusivity—it’s about driving transformation.”

Similarly, Absa’s “In My Story” campaign amplifies women’s voices in business and tech, backed by R9.4 billion in procurement spend for women-owned enterprises. Yet the Ladies Invitational remains central to Absa’s sports equity strategy, serving as a blueprint for how corporate partnerships can dismantle barriers.

A movement, not just a tournament

Nsibanyoni emphasises that the Invitational’s impact transcends the fairways: “We are uplifting communities through sport. This is a statement, a movement, and a powerful step toward gender parity.”

By spotlighting female athletes on a national stage, Absa aims to inspire young girls while challenging stereotypes in sports leadership.
