All-star lineup, global hit: 2024 SA Song of the Year winner ‘Biri Marung’

A significant record of 2024, ‘Biri Marung‘ is a hit song by New Money Gang musicians Mr Pilato and Ego Slimflow.

Played as the crossover song into the new year in six radio stations, the song brings together a distinguished group of South African artists, including Scott’s Maphuma, Tebogo G Mashego, Scotts Maphuma, Sje Konka, Amapiano king Focalistic, DJ Maphorisa and CowBoii, who in their own way dropped unique verses.

Since its release, the single has hit #1 on the official single charts in South Africa and globally. It has soared to #3 on Shazam, it has also climbed into local charts across 24 countries including US, UK, Canada, Germany, Nigeria and more.

Focalistic’s contribution to ‘Biri Marung’ – notably the catchy chants ‘Cash kontant huh … Trrrrrr phaa ‘huh …Shandapha huh (yey wena mahn!) … Are Maradona ke star huh’ – has stolen the spotlight, driving the track to new heights of popularity with a viral TikTok dance.

Weaving together beats and vocals into a seamless experience, ‘Biri Marung‘ has already garnered 1.7million creations with 2 billion views on Tik Tok alone, fuelled by its globally captivating dance challenge — which has been replicated by the like of Davido, and most recently Chris Brown during his recent sold-out South African affair.

This track is not only a dance floor hit but also a national anthem of sort, representing pride of South African people, all the while embodying the spirit of Amapiano as a genre that brings people together.
