ICC case filed against Sudan’s Port Sudan leaders over war crimes

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights has filed a case at the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Port Sudan Authority leaders, accusing them of war crimes and chemical weapon use, as concerns rise over extremist militias fueling instability across the region.

The Sudanese Alliance for Rights has filed a legal case before the International Criminal Court (ICC) against four senior leaders of the Port Sudan Authority, including Chairman of the Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, accusing them of using chemical weapons and committing serious violations against civilians.

The lawsuit names army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Yasser al-Atta, Shams al-Din al-Kabashi, and Major General Taher Mohammed, urging the ICC to launch an urgent investigation and hold the officials accountable, in collaboration with a team of international lawyers.

This move follows the failure of the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to resolve Sudan’s escalating crisis through dialogue, as the Sudanese army has repeatedly refused to honor peace agreements. Civil society groups have now turned to international justice as violations against civilians continue unabated.

The case also highlights growing continental concerns over the expanding influence of extremist militias allied with Sudanese authorities, which threaten border security and regional stability.

Human rights experts say the initiative represents a proactive step to protect civilians and enforce accountability for military leaders before international justice.

Similar recourse to international justice has been pursued elsewhere, including South Africa’s ICJ genocide case against Israel, underscoring growing reliance on global courts when local remedies fail.
