The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has issued an urgent double warning as the new financial year kicks off today, 02 April 2026.
While the first wave of payments is currently rolling out, SASSA has warned of verification delays affecting thousands of recipients across all categories.
In a formal statement released Thursday, April 2, 2026, SASSA accused 1Life Insurance of “unlawfully” using the agency’s logo to suggest an official partnership for funeral cover. The agency was categorical that it does not partner with any private insurers or funeral schemes. This warning is particularly important for beneficiaries accessing their confirmed 2026 increased grant amounts this week, as predatory marketing often increases during monthly payment cycle.
”Not in partnership” — SASSA sets the record straight
The agency reminded the public that the Social Assistance Act strictly limits third-party deductions from social grants. The move to call out 1Life Insurance is part of a broader effort to protect monthly payments from unauthorised debits.
”SASSA strongly distances itself from this and categorically states that the Agency is NOT in partnership with 1Life Insurance to provide funeral cover,” the statement read. “Furthermore, SASSA does not, at any point, work with insurance companies or funeral schemes.”
This integrity drive coincides with the SASSA April 2026 payment dates, where the focus has shifted toward “life certification” and eligibility reviews. Many beneficiaries are finding their payments delayed or suspended because they have not completed the latest biometric or income reviews required by the new SASSA grant model.
How to protect your grant and resolve delays
SASSA is urging all beneficiaries—including those on Disability and Children’s grants—to remain vigilant against scammers who use official branding to steal PINs or ID numbers. If your grant has not been paid on the expected date, it is likely due to the ongoing verification reviews and stopped grants drive rather than a system error.
To ensure your funds are safe:
- Verify all offers: Only trust information found on the official SASSA portal or at local offices.
- Report unauthorised deductions: If you see insurance premiums you didn’t sign up for, report them to your nearest Sassa office immediately.
- Update your details: If your payment is late, visit a SASSA branch to complete your life certification and ensure your contact details are current.
As the 2026/2027 SASSA schedule continues with Old Age and Disability grants on April 2 and 7 respectively, the agency remains on high alert for both administrative non-compliance and external fraud attempts.
