JOHANNESBURG — The South African music industry is mourning the death of singer Danny K’s wife, Lisa Koppel, who died at 41 after a private battle with colorectal cancer.
Danny K confirmed her death in a personal tribute posted to his verified Instagram account on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, ending nearly three years of silence about her illness.
“For the first time, I want to share the deeply private and courageous battle my beloved wife, Lisa Koppel (41), fought over the past three years,” Danny K wrote.
Lisa was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November 2023. Danny K said the family “searched for hope in South Africa and around the world, pursuing every treatment and every opportunity available.”
Danny K pays tribute to Lisa Koppel
In his tribute, Danny K described Lisa as someone who never wanted her illness to define her.
She “remained gentle, humble and remarkably brave”, he wrote, while choosing to shield their three children from the weight of her diagnosis for as long as she could.
Danny K also thanked the medical teams who treated Lisa during her illness, both in South Africa and overseas, for their care throughout what he described as an incredibly difficult journey.
A formal statement issued to the media on behalf of the Koppel and Gundelfinger families also confirmed Lisa’s death and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy.
Lisa Koppel wanted to raise cancer awareness
One detail stands out in the family’s tribute: Lisa had hoped to speak publicly about her diagnosis to help others recognise colorectal cancer early.
She never got that chance.
Her family says they will now carry that mission forward in her name, beginning with the awareness campaign attached to the announcement of her death.
NOWinSA also explains what colorectal cancer is and why it’s striking younger patients in a companion guide published alongside this tribute.
Lisa’s death comes as more younger adults are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, bringing renewed attention to symptoms, screening and early detection.
It also echoes the loss of Isidingo actress Michelle Botes, who died in 2024 after a private battle with an advanced and rare form of blood cancer.
Both families ultimately chose to turn deeply personal loss into a wider public health message.
Why colorectal cancer awareness matters
Colorectal cancer was traditionally screened for from age 50, but screening guidance has shifted.
International bodies now recommend routine screening from 45 for people at average risk, while the disease is increasingly being diagnosed in adults much younger than that.
Cancer researchers note that one in five diagnoses now occurs in someone under 55, making early detection an increasingly important public health focus.

How Danny K will remember Lisa
Danny K closed his tribute with words that capture the scale of his loss:
“I have lost the wife I worshipped, our three children have lost an extraordinary mother, and her family and friends have lost someone they deeply loved.”
He added that Lisa’s illness “will never define her”, choosing instead to remember “the way she lived and loved: with kindness, humility, courage and an unwavering devotion to the people who meant everything to her.”
Lisa leaves behind her husband, their three children, and a wider family and community that loved her deeply.
The Koppel and Gundelfinger families have asked the public for prayers, compassion and privacy as they grieve. They have also requested that media direct all enquiries to their spokesperson rather than contacting the family directly.
