Shaquille O’Neal has spent much of his life around professional sport, but what happens after the final whistle has captured his attention in a new true-crime series.
The NBA legend is executive producer of Game Day Murders, a six-part Investigation Discovery series examining murder cases linked to athletes, teams and the wider sports world.
The series joins a growing slate of Warner Bros documentary programming available to South African audiences.
‘Game Day Murders‘ premieres on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 9pm CAT on Investigation Discovery (ID), DStv Channel 171.
O’Neal, who describes himself as a lifelong true-crime enthusiast, said his interest in the stories grew from looking beyond what happens on the court or field.
“I’ve been around sports my whole life. And what surprised me is that some of the biggest stories aren’t what happened on the field or on the court,” he told TV Insider.
“What happens after the whistle blows, that’s when it happens.”
That fascination led him to approach sports broadcaster Lindsay Czarniak about the project.
Czarniak hosts the series, which features interviews with families, former teammates and people close to the cases.
O’Neal has also stressed that the series was made with respect for the victims, rather than simply turning tragic cases into entertainment.
“I don’t want to sensationalise the victims of the tragedy, so I try to approach the stories with a lot of respect,” he said.
The premiere revisits the 2003 disappearance and murder of Baylor University basketball player Patrick Dennehy.
His former teammate Ellis Kidd Jr. gives his account of the investigation, which exposed a major college basketball scandal.
Other episodes examine the murder-for-hire case involving NHL player Mike Danton, the killing of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, the murder of Cincinnati Reds player Dernell Stenson and the 2007 home-invasion killing of NFL star Sean Taylor.
For viewers looking for an early guide, Game Day Murders currently holds a 7.4/10 rating on IMDb, based on viewer ratings.
Czarniak plays a key role in Game Day Murders
The series is guided by Czarniak, whom O’Neal described as integral to bringing the project together.
“She is the smartest person to do this. I couldn’t have done this without her,” he said.
O’Neal’s long-standing interest in true crime has also influenced how he approached the series. He said the genre keeps audiences guessing in a way scripted sports and action stories cannot.
“When you watch true crime, you don’t know what is going to happen,” he said.
Game Day Murders premieres on September 14, 2026, at 9pm CAT on ID, DStv Channel 171, with new episodes airing weekly.
