Kaizer Chiefs have moved up to third on the Betway Premiership log after edging Siwelele FC 3-2 in a five-goal thriller at a packed, rain-lashed Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday evening, September 6, 2026.
Amakhosi bounced back from consecutive league draws, digging deep in the final stages to secure all three points.
Head coach Fernando da Cruz retained the three-centre-back system he has used for three straight matches, with Zitha Kwinika, Thabo Moloisane and Inacio Miguel forming the defensive trio.
The approach paid off in the 30th minute. Teenage sensation Mfundo Vilakazi opened the scoring with a composed finish to give Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Chiefs continued to control the contest after the break and doubled their advantage in the 65th minute. Wandile Duba produced an audacious backheel finish from Mduduzi Shabalala’s delivery to make it 2-0.
Siwelele responded almost immediately. Aphiwe Baliti pulled one back in the 68th minute, giving the visitors renewed hope.
Chiefs restored their two-goal cushion eight minutes later. Substitute Faiz Abrahams curled a free-kick against the upright, with the ball rebounding off Siwelele goalkeeper Samukelo Xulu and into the net for an own goal.
The late drama was not over.
Michel N’Guessan pulled another goal back in the second minute of stoppage time, scoring with his first touch after coming off the bench.
Chiefs held on through the remaining minutes to secure the 3-2 victory and all three points.
Chiefs strengthen their position on the Betway Premiership log
South Africa’s biggest football clubs have a history of fierce competition, and Sunday’s result has put Chiefs firmly into the early Betway Premiership title conversation.
The victory takes Amakhosi to 11 points from five matches and third place on the log.
They sit two points behind second-placed Orlando Pirates and five points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played an extra fixture.
Crucially, Kaizer Chiefs remain unbeaten this season, having recorded three wins and two draws from their opening five league matches.
The result also settled a logistical headache for the Premier Soccer League after the fixture moved from Royal Bafokeng Stadium to Dobsonville Stadium late in the week.
Soweto’s “Dobsie” provided the atmosphere Chiefs needed, despite the cold and rain testing both teams throughout the match.
Kaizer Chiefs turn attention to Polokwane City
Attention now turns to a demanding stretch for da Cruz’s side.
Kaizer Chiefs travel to Polokwane City on Saturday, September 12, for a Betway Premiership clash at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
The match comes before Chiefs host Mamelodi Sundowns in a major league clash the following week.

The Sundowns meeting could prove significant in determining which side gains the early psychological advantage in the Betway Premiership title race.
For Siwelele FC, the priorities are different.
Coach Lehlohonolo Seema now has time to address the defensive lapses that allowed Chiefs to build a two-goal lead twice.
Siwelele’s next league outing comes on Wednesday, September 9, away to Mamelodi Sundowns.
