Orlando Pirates began their MTN8 title defense in style, defeating Polokwane City 2-0 in a quarter-final clash at Orlando Stadium. The Buccaneers’ victory, which showcased a mix of new talent and established stars, sees them advance to the semi-finals of the season’s first knockout tournament.
The home side, under new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, came out with high intensity, dominating possession and creating early scoring opportunities. The pressure paid off in the 13th minute when new signing Oswin Appollis, making his debut against his former club, opened the scoring. The goal came after a well-placed setup from Boitumelo Radiopane, who put Appollis through on goal.
Pirates doubled their lead in the 34th minute. Appollis was once again at the center of the action, drawing a foul inside the box which resulted in a penalty. Patrick Maswanganyi confidently stepped up and converted the spot-kick, giving the Buccaneers a comfortable two-goal cushion heading into halftime.
Polokwane City, having qualified for the tournament for the second consecutive season, showed more energy in the second half as they pushed to find a way back into the game. However, the Pirates defense, led by newly appointed captain Nkosinathi Sibisi, held firm. Pirates also had chances to extend their lead, with a free-kick from Deon Hotto rattling the crossbar in the 60th minute.
Notable debuts for Pirates included Sipho Mbule and Sihle Nduli, who both started the match. The victory marks a positive start to the new season for Orlando Pirates and sets the stage for what promises to be a competitive semi-final showdown. The defending champions will be looking to secure a fourth consecutive MTN8 title.
