The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued a critical reminder to grant beneficiaries still using the SASSA Gold Cards: these cards are scheduled to stop working on Friday, February 28, 2025.
Postbank confirmed the deadline, urging beneficiaries to upgrade to the new Black Card to avoid disruptions in accessing their grants.
“All SASSA Gold Cards will stop working on 28 Feb 2025,” Postbank stated on Tuesday. “If you haven’t upgraded to the Postbank Black Card, dial *120*218*3# to find outlets in your area.”
Beneficiaries can continue using their Gold Cards at major retail chains like Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Spar, and Boxer, as well as ATMs nationwide, until the deadline. However, the transition has been marred by chaos, with many recipients reporting inefficiencies and delays in obtaining the new cards.
SRD grant fraud crackdown
The announcement comes amid a broader crackdown on Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant fraud. Two Stellenbosch University students, Joel Cedras and Veer Gosai, uncovered vulnerabilities in SASSA’s system, revealing how identities were stolen to fraudulently claim grants. Their investigation exposed nearly 75,000 suspicious applications for people born in February 2005, far exceeding the birth rate for that month.
Following their findings, a hacking group called N4aughtySec claimed responsibility for R175 million in fraudulent grant payments, allegedly exploiting weaknesses in credit bureaus and banking systems. While the credit bureaus denied breaches, the incident prompted SASSA to suspend its electronic Know-Your-Customer (eKYC) system, leaving legitimate beneficiaries unable to verify their identities.
Bridget Masango, chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Social Development, called for urgent intervention. “The Minister must ensure the verification system is brought back online to enable deserving beneficiaries to receive their grants,” she said.
DA calls for interim measures
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has urged SASSA to delay the Gold Card expiration until all beneficiaries have transitioned to the new system. DA MP Bridget Masango highlighted the stress and financial strain caused by the chaotic rollout, stating, “Minister Tolashe must account to Parliament on the number of beneficiaries still reliant on Gold Cards and the steps being taken to address the SRD grant verification system’s suspension.”
The DA also advised beneficiaries to consider opening accounts with reliable banks instead of switching to the Postbank Black Card, citing widespread inefficiencies in the transition process.
What’s Next?
SASSA has announced plans to introduce facial recognition technology to verify SRD grant beneficiaries, aiming to curb fraud. However, details remain scarce, leaving many beneficiaries in limbo.
For now, the message is clear: whether you receive grants for childcare, are a war veteran or an elderly individual qualified for SASSA grants, make sure to upgrade your SASSA Gold Card before February 28 (2025) deadline to ensure uninterrupted access to your grants.
