Travel alert! Namibia’s new Visa policy hits US, UK & 30+ countries

As Namibia’s first female president takes charge, a bold visa policy shift sparks debates over diplomacy, tourism risks, and global equity. Here’s what you need to know.

Windhoek, Namibia – In a landmark decision set to reshape travel and diplomacy, Namibia will revoke visa-free access for citizens of more than 30 countries.

The new policy affects the United States, United Kingdom, and most EU states, effective 1 April 2025. The move, finalised by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s cabinet in July 2024, responds to longstanding reciprocity disputes affecting Namibian passport holders.

Why Namibia’s visa policy is changing

The Namibian government emphasised “a lack of reciprocity” as the core reason for scrapping visa exemptions. While travelers from Germany—Namibia’s top tourism market—and other Western nations previously enjoyed hassle-free entry, Namibians face stringent visa requirements to visit these countries.

“Namibia will enforce new visa requirements for nationals from 33 countries, including Switzerland. This change applies to nations that have not reciprocated Namibia’s visa exemption policies,” the embassy shared (Source).

Officials argue the policy shift prioritises diplomatic fairness, though tourism leaders warn of economic fallout.

Tourism industry braces for impact

Namibia’s economy relies heavily on tourism, with Europeans accounting for over 60% of visitors. Industry stakeholders fear the new rules could deter last-minute travelers and complicate itineraries.

With slow travel recovery post-pandemic in most parts of the world, there are worries about delays in visa processing and traveler confusion.

US Embassy guidance for travelers

The US Embassy in Namibia urged citizens to plan ahead, posting on X:
“Beginning April 1, 2025, U.S. citizen tourists must obtain a visa prior to entering Namibia. Apply via Namibia’s online portal: eservices.mhaiss.gov.na/visaonarrival. Carry a printed approval notice. Visas on arrival remain available at key entry points, but systems are new and subject to change.”

President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s diplomatic vision

The policy aligns with Namibia’s first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who vowed to address unequal global mobility during her March 2025 inauguration.

Analysts note the decision signals her administration’s commitment to rebalancing international agreements, even at the risk of short-term tourism losses.

What travelers need to know

  • Affected Countries: US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, and 25+ others (full list pending).
  • Visa Options: Apply online pre-travel or obtain on arrival at Windhoek, Walvis Bay, and major borders.
  • Deadline: April 1, 2025.

Balancing act: diplomacy vs tourism

While Namibia asserts its stance on reciprocity, the tourism sector urges transitional support. With global travel agencies updating advisories, the coming months will test whether diplomatic equity can coexist with economic stability in one of Africa’s most scenic destinations.
