Urgent Update: Gold card deadline extended to May 32, 2025

In a last-minute reprieve, Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development announced a two-month extension for SASSA gold card validity. Here’s what you need to know:

  • New deadline: “The cards will continue up until the end of May this time around, which means people have plenty of time to make sure they replace their gold cards. There’ll be no alternatives post the end of May to access your grants,” CEO of Postbank, Nikki Mbengashe said addressing the media briefing on Friday (March 28).
  • Critical warning: Postbank has explicitly requested that “beneficiaries who still have gold cards not use or go the Post Office to access their grants.”
  • Cardless services are no longer available: Beneficiaries are urged to know that cardless services are no longer available and no beneficiaries have been registered for cardless services.”
  • SASSA Gold Cards still work the same: SASSA cards still work the same and can be used at all retailers and ATMs through to 31 May 2024. For those who still need to switch to the black card, there are over 300 national sites available countrywide.

Mbengashe’s direct sppeal:
“”Please do not go to the Post Office (SAPO) if you don’t have a card, because they’ll not be able to service you because we have this solution now (extended May 31 gold card deadline). Only go to the Post Office if you have lost your card or you’re an asylum seeker.”

How to access your grant

  • Postbank black card: Use at ATMs, retailers (Shoprite, Pick n Pay).
  • Bank transfer: The beneficiary has to request SASSA to do this by completing the Annexure C bank form (see attached link) authorising the agency to deposit their payment–available from the fist day of the month–in their bank account. The beneficiary needs to note that banks charge money for any ATM withdrawals and this will be deducted from the funds in their card.

Critical safety tips

  • Swap Cards NOW: Visit your nearest SASSA office or Postbank branch.
  • Avoid Fraud: Never share your PIN or personal details.
  • Verify Status: SMS “STATUS [ID]” to 32555 or WhatsApp 082 046 8553.

Why SASSA matters

SASSA’s grants support 1 in 3 South Africans, reducing poverty and inequality. Social grants consume 81% of the Social Development budget, covering essentials like food, education, and healthcare.

As Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana stated: “Our social safety net is among the most comprehensive in emerging economies.”
