Banyana Banyana face Nigeria’s Super Falcons in a crucial FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 qualifier on Thursday night.
Kick-off is at 22:00 South African time at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca in Morocco.
The match comes after both sides exited the WAFCON 2026 quarterfinals, ending their hopes of securing one of Africa’s four automatic World Cup places.
Banyana have also missed out on the chance to compete for the tournament’s increased prize money, after CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced a major boost to the WAFCON purse — WAFCON prize money doubled after a 900% rise.
But the door to Brazil remains open. The winner of Thursday’s clash advances to the next stage of the World Cup qualification route, while the loser’s campaign ends.
What happens if Banyana Banyana win?
A victory over Nigeria will not send South Africa directly to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon and Malawi have already secured Africa’s four automatic places.
Morocco booked its place after beating Banyana Banyana 2-1 in the WAFCON quarterfinals, leaving South Africa to pursue the longer play-off route. African teams already qualified.
Instead, Banyana will advance to the FIFA Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament. That route offers another opportunity to secure one of the three remaining World Cup places.
Banyana will join 29 other teams in the final 32-team field for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
That makes Thursday’s match the first step on a longer road to Brazil.
The next phase of the qualification journey is scheduled for November and December 2026, followed by the final play-off stage in February 2027.
So, beating Nigeria keeps Banyana’s World Cup dream alive, but more work will follow.
What happens if Banyana Banyana lose?
There is no second route for South Africa after Thursday.
A defeat to Nigeria will eliminate Banyana from the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification race. The same applies to Nigeria.
That is why coach Desiree Ellis has described the clash as a major opportunity, despite admitting this is not where South Africa wanted to find itself after WAFCON.
“We obviously have to bring our A game, there’s no margin for error,” Ellis said ahead of the match.
The rivalry adds another layer. Nigeria have historically dominated African women’s football, while Banyana won their first WAFCON title in 2022.
The two sides have also met repeatedly in major continental contests.
Banyana Banyana’s impact on South African women’s football
The match matters beyond the pitch and could give South African women’s football a major boost.
Banyana have already shown how their goals can create an impact beyond results through the Goals 4 Pads campaign.
Before their WAFCON quarterfinal against Morocco, the team had unlocked 5,000 sanitary pads. Their goal against Morocco added another 1,000, taking the campaign total to 6,000 packs of Stayfree sanitary pads for young girls across South Africa.

Most importantly for Goals 4 Pads, they have scored in every match of their WAFCON campaign, taking the initiative to 6,000 packs of Stayfree sanitary pads for young girls across South Africa.”
The initiative, launched in June through Stayfree, turns every Banyana goal into 1,000 sanitary pads, helping girls access essential menstrual products.

That makes every goal important beyond the scoreboard.
Another Banyana goal against Nigeria would unlock another 1,000 sanitary pads, extending the campaign’s reach while the team fights to keep its World Cup hopes alive.
The campaign aims to address period poverty and support girls who may face barriers to sport, school and everyday activities because they lack access to appropriate menstrual products.
