SASSA beneficiaries still using the old Gold Card have until August 31, 2026 to switch to the new Postbank Black Card, but what happens if they miss the deadline?
The Gold Card deadline has already been confirmed, with Postbank urging remaining beneficiaries to complete the switch before the cut-off.
Social Development Minister Dina Pule has assured beneficiaries that the card migration will not interrupt their grant payments.
However, Postbank has warned that Gold Cards will stop working after the deadline, potentially disrupting access to grant payments for those who have not switched.
The deadline also comes just days before the next payment cycle begins. Beneficiaries can check the confirmed September 2026 payment dates to see when their grants are due.
“I want to assure the people of South Africa, especially SASSA beneficiaries, that they must not worry. They will receive their grants on time.
“All they need to do is change from the gold card to the black one, but this will never affect their grants,” Pule said.
What happens if you don’t switch your SASSA Gold Card?
Postbank has warned that SASSA Gold Cards will stop working after August 31, 2026.
Beneficiaries who do not replace their cards could therefore face problems accessing their grant payments.
The issue is not that beneficiaries will lose their grant entitlement. Instead, the old card will no longer provide the usual way to access money paid into the account.
Postbank says more than 1.5 million beneficiaries have already switched to the Black Card, leaving around 280,000 still needing to make the change.
Postbank has also confirmed that the deadline will not be extended any further.
The agency has urged beneficiaries not to wait until the final days, when longer queues could make the replacement process more difficult.
Who needs to switch from the SASSA Gold Card?
The switch applies to beneficiaries who still use a SASSA Gold Card to withdraw cash, make purchases or otherwise access their grants.
Anyone who already has a Postbank Black Card does not need to take further action.
Beneficiaries who receive their grants directly into accounts with commercial banks such as Capitec, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank or FNB also do not need to replace their bank cards.
The same applies to people who no longer use a SASSA Gold Card to access their grant payments.
Minister Pule says grant payments will continue
Pule said the Department of Social Development, SASSA, Postbank and the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies are working together to manage the card migration.
“Beneficiaries should remain calm. Their grants will continue to be paid into their accounts every month, and they can withdraw their money using their bank cards at participating outlets,” she said.
According to Pule, the new system should also reduce the logistical challenges of transporting cash to pay points, making the payment process more reliable.
Government is also rolling out biometric verification alongside the card switch to strengthen the integrity of the grant system.
SASSA beneficiaries already facing service pressure
The Gold Card switch comes as SASSA continues dealing with other pressures affecting beneficiaries, including long queues and a backlog of blocked grant payments.
Beneficiaries can read more about the SASSA payment backlog to understand the separate issues currently affecting some grant recipients.
Those who have been selected for ongoing SASSA grant reviews should also keep track of their review requirements.
Beneficiaries can check the latest SASSA grant review information while preparing any documents requested by the agency.
These issues are separate from the Gold Card migration, but beneficiaries should avoid leaving multiple administrative matters unresolved as the September payment cycle approaches.
How to switch to the Postbank Black Card
Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thami Cele has urged beneficiaries not to wait until the final days to replace their Gold Cards.
“The problem with that is you don’t know what is going to happen at the end, because you may have other emergencies, and then you will need your money,” Cele said.
Beneficiaries can find their nearest replacement site by:
- Dialling 120355# on their phone before leaving home.
- Following the prompts to share their location.
- Receiving an SMS listing nearby collection sites.
Replacement sites have also been set up at retail partners including Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite and Spar.
Postbank has capacity to handle up to 500,000 people a month, so beneficiaries do not need to panic. Cele nevertheless recommends collecting the new card before the next grant payment to avoid potential problems.
