Heads up: If you’re still using an older iPhone or Android phone, you may wake up today to find your WhatsApp no longer working.
Meta-owned WhatsApp is officially ending support for several outdated smartphones starting June 1, 2025, as part of its routine software update cycle. Originally planned for May 5, the deadline was delayed to give users more time to prepare.
As per WhatsApp’s latest minimum requirements, iPhones must now run iOS 15.1 or higher, and Android devices must be on version 5.1 or later.
Full list: iPhones that will lose WhatsApp access from June 1
If your iPhone can’t be updated to iOS 15.1, WhatsApp will no longer function. These iPhones are officially cut off:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
Some reports have incorrectly added the following devices:
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE (1st gen)
However, these models support iOS 15.8.4. So, as long as they’re updated, they should continue to work with WhatsApp – at least until the next cutoff, likely in a year or two.“Meta had earlier hinted the change would roll out back in May 2025 (yep, that is next year). But surprisingly the deadline has moved up. And it is here,” reported Zee Media Bureau.
Android phones also affected
If you’re using Android 5.0 or earlier, WhatsApp will also stop working. Affected models include:
- Samsung Galaxy S3 / S4
- HTC One X
- Sony Xperia Z / Z1
- LG G2
- Huawei Ascend P6
- Moto G (1st Gen)
- Moto E (2014)
- Motorola Razr HD
Due to Android’s fragmented update cycle, many older phones—even those released as recently as 2014—may be left out in the cold.
Why this is happening
Every few years, WhatsApp increases its system requirements to enhance performance, strengthen privacy, and ensure compatibility with newer features like end-to-end encryption, privacy locks, and chat disappearing timers.
“Older devices no longer get security patches and that makes them vulnerable. With WhatsApp becoming increasingly privacy-focused, it is critical that users are on secure and supported systems.”
WhatsApp remains a dominant player in global messaging, with nearly 3 billion users worldwide, including a growing base across Africa. In fact, despite ongoing concerns over data privacy, the app remains “poppp-popular among Africans,” as highlighted in this NOWinSA user survey.
What can you do if your phone is affected?
If your phone made the cut-off list, here are your best options:
✅ Upgrade your phone
Consider switching to a newer device that supports iOS 15.1 or Android 5.1+. Affordable options include the iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd Gen) or budget-friendly Samsung A-series 5G devices.
✅ Check for software updates
If you own an iPhone 6s, 6s Plus or iPhone SE (1st Gen), update to iOS 15.8.4 via: Settings > General > Software Update
✅ Back up your chats
Before losing access: WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup
Use iCloud (iPhone) or Google Drive (Android) to preserve your conversation history.
✅ Explore alternative messaging apps
Apps like Telegram or Signal may still support your older device, though user bases and feature sets vary.
Tech moving on: Is your iPhone a dinosaur?
The iPhone X and beyond have long replaced earlier models in performance, camera, and AI features. The 2024 iPhone 16 series – now available in South Africa – showcases how far the iPhone ecosystem has evolved. And Apple’s new AI promises even more innovation that older devices simply can’t keep up with.
As WhatsApp continues to evolve with a focus on privacy, performance, and AI integration, outdated phones are being left behind. Whether you view your device as a nostalgic gem or a trusty backup, it may finally be time to let go.
