Shoprite Sixty60’s Bold Expansion in South Africa Targets Underserved Communities

With 19 Shoprite stores added and 2.6 million Huawei users onboarded, Sixty60’s growth isn’t rapid—it’s revolutionary. Discover how Shoprite’s affordable, on-demand grocery service bridges tech gaps and reaches underserved communities.

South Africa’s retail landscape is undergoing a seismic shift as Shoprite’s Sixty60 service accelerates its reach, blending hyper-convenience with cutting-edge digital solutions.

Following a successful pilot, the on-demand grocery delivery platform—already a household name through Checkers—is now expanding to 19 Shoprite supermarkets across eight provinces, signaling a bold new chapter for affordable, efficient shopping.

Expanding Access to On-Demand Convenience

The Shoprite Group announced that Sixty60, renowned for its award-winning service, will soon bring its “heavy lifting” to more communities. A phased rollout aims to replicate the efficiency that made Sixty60 a market leader, with Neil Schreuder, Chief of Strategy and Innovation at the Shoprite Group emphasising meticulous preparation:

After many months of working feverishly behind-the-scenes, we are excited to introduce Shoprite Sixty60 to locations where it can have a meaningful impact for consumers needing the convenience of home delivery, and where the logistics are in place to support a seamless experience.”

Already operational at Shoprite Atlantis (Western Cape) and Shoprite Jabulani (Soweto), the service will debut in Shoprite Kleinmond (Western Cape) and Shoprite Kriel (Mpumalanga) this month.

Bridging the Digital Divide: Sixty60’s New E-Commerce Frontier

In a parallel leap, Checkers has unveiled a groundbreaking e-commerce website to complement its Sixty60 mobile app, democratising access for millions. The move specifically targets Huawei smartphone users – third-largest mobile brand in South Africa (after Samsung and Apple respectively) – who previously faced app limitations.
“Huawei is the third most popular mobile phone brand in South Africa (per 2024 Statcounter). This means 2.6 million potential customers can shop on Sixty60 for the first time,” Checkers declared.

The browser-based platform, beta-tested at beta.sixty60.co.za, mirrors the app’s functionality, allowing users to browse over 10,000 products, schedule same-day deliveries in 60-minute slots, and sync carts across devices. Schreuder highlighted the synergy:
“The experience is seamless across the app and web, with accounts and shopping baskets automatically synced in real-time.”

Why This Matters

The dual expansion—geographic and digital—positions Sixty60 as a lifeline for time-strapped households and tech-excluded communities alike. By maintaining in-store pricing and integrating rewards, Shoprite and Checkers are not just chasing trends but reshaping South Africa’s retail future.

“The service includes over 10,000 larger general merchandise products available for same-day delivery within precise sixty-minute time slots,” Checkers added, cementing its pledge to blend speed with reliability.

With 19 Shoprite stores joining the network and Huawei users finally onboarded, Sixty60’s growth isn’t just rapid—it’s revolutionary.
