Nike retains top spot as Africa’s most admired brand

American sportswear giant Nike has retained the top spot as the most admired brand at Brand Africa 100's anual event for the 3rd time in a raw, while Adidas and Samsung took the second and third spots respectively.

World acclaimed sportswear brand Nike took the top spot as Africa’s most admired brand in Africa for 2020 at the Brand Africa 100, while its rival Adidas came in second.

South Korean electronics group Samsung was acknowledged as number 1 Most Admired Electronics Brand and third overall Most Admired Brand for the second time in a raw.

“Samsung’s relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation has resulted in products that are redefining the worlds of TVs, smartphones, wearable devices, tablets, cameras, digital appliance and other ground-breaking technological categories,” the company said in a statement.

“The company is therefore perfectly positioned to connect people across the continent, touch lives, and importantly for Africa, offer an unprecedented level of value through its product range.”

Offshore counterparts, Puma, Gucci, Apple, Coca Cola, Airtel and Tecno round off the top 10 most admired brands on the continent. While the BBC top media category ranking proves once again who’s on top of the media narrative game in Africa, a new hope for the continent came in the form of Nigeria’s GT Bank which returned to the top spot in financial services.

The continent’s best-loved 100 brands were revealed during a streamed live event which coincided with the opening of the stock exchanges in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, to demonstrate brand value late.

The CEO’s of the Kenyan, Nigerian and South African stock exchanges and executives from Google Africa, Dangote, BCW and Safaricom were among keynote speakers.

The panel reflected on some of the challenges and the mitigation of the impact of coronavirus on the global economy and how it continues to disrupt supply and demand chains, specially for African brands, which dropped to an all time low of 13% (13 of the 100 brands) this year and just over 60% in 10 years.

A brainchild of South African brand guru Thebe Ikalafeng, Brand Africa 100 is the first and most comprehensive Pan-African study and ranking of brands in Africa.

Collectively these countries account for over 80% of the population and over 80% of the GDP of Africa. Download a full  rankings report here.
