Basic Education confirms readiness for 2025 matric finals

DBE and Umalusi endorse exam plans as provinces push toward higher pass targets

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has officially affirmed that all provinces are ready to conduct the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, with preparation reports confirming logistics, venue readiness, security and invigilation systems.

The national exam schedule, released by DBE, shows a six-week national exam window beginning Tuesday, October 21 and ending Thursday, November 27. The exam cycle starts with Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and Information Technology (IT) practicals before moving into core academic subjects like languages, mathematics, sciences, business studies, and life sciences.

Over 700,000 Grade 12 learners across South Africa are expected to take part in this exam season — a significant moment in their schooling careers.

Nationwide readiness: From rural to urban

According to official DBE statements, all provinces have submitted readiness reports confirming that:

  • Invigilation rosters are finalised and all invigilators have been trained;
  • Secure printing, packaging and transport of exam papers have been arranged;
  • Examination centres (both rural and urban) have been audited for compliance and readiness;
  • Security measures are in place to prevent leaks and irregularities across all districts.

Umalusi, the national quality assurance body, has reviewed these plans and described the 2025 NSC examination cycle as “well-planned, robust and inclusive.”

Key milestones & timetable highlights

The exam timetable also notes several significant milestones outside the main writing period:

  • Life Orientation Common Assessment Task (CAT) held early September, followed by rewrites mid-October.
  • Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Design practicals scheduled in August and October.
  • Pledge Signing Ceremony for matriculants will be held on October 17, 2025, as a symbolic affirmation of integrity before exams begin.

Provincial focus: Gauteng & KwaZulu-Natal

Gauteng

While this article is about national readiness, Gauteng remains a benchmark — it has confirmed full centre readiness, strong revision interventions, and aims to maintain leadership in results as it has in previous years.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)

KZN is making headlines with its ambitious goal: a 95% pass rate in 2025.
After achieving 89.5% in 2024 — one of the top improvements nationally — MEC Sipho Hlomuka announced a proactive academic improvement plan. The plan incorporates district-specific strategies across all 12 districts, as well as winter and spring support programmes for learners, including curriculum revision and NSC-style question exposure.

“We developed a plan to improve our pass rate to a minimum of 95%, with the ultimate goal of reaching 100%,” Hlomuka said, acknowledging that external factors might influence the outcome but affirming that efforts will be made to mitigate them.

What this means going forward

With nationwide systems cleared, the real battle now is in execution — ensuring exams run smoothly, integrity is upheld, and learners have the support they need in these final weeks.

Provincial efforts, especially in challenging areas, will be tested. The 2025 class has both the opportunity and the pressure to push pass rates higher than ever before — especially in provinces like KZN, which is betting on strong upward momentum.
