The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed payment dates for the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for January 2025. Payments for all qualifying SRD beneficiaries will be processed during the final week of the month, from January 25 to January 31, 2025.
Coming just three weeks after the processing of Child’s Grants and first ever payments for the elderly for 2025, disability grants in the first week of January, beneficiaries are encouraged to check their payment status on the SRD website to find out the exact date their payment will reflect in their bank accounts.
The Role of the SRD Grant
Valued at R370, the SRD grant continues to serve as a crucial tool for poverty alleviation in South Africa. It provides essential financial support to vulnerable individuals and families, ensuring a minimum standard of living.
Introduced in May 2020 in response to the socio-economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when restricted physical interactions resulted in significant job losses, the grant was designed to alleviate poverty and ensure a basic standard of living for those most in need. Who Is Eligible For The SASSA R370 Grant in 2025
To quality, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Applicants must be:
- Be a South African citizens, permanent residents or refugees registered with Home Affairs;
- Be a resident within the borders of the Republic of South Africa;
- Be between 18 and 60 years
- Unemployed;
- Not receiving any income;
- Not receiving any social grant;
- Not receiving any unemployment insurance benefit (UIF) and does not qualify to receive unemployment insurance benefits;
- Not receiving a stipend from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme;
- Not receiving any other government COVID-19 response support; and
- Not resident in a government funded or subsidised institution.
