When it comes to the value of one’s hard-earned rand, South Africans are understandably cautious when investing in a vehicle. Reliability, efficiency, and that undeniable “wow factor” remain key drivers for most consumers.
Historically, Isuzu has been a brand rooted in the commercial and bakkie segment. But with the launch of its latest SUV offering, the refined Isuzu MU-X, the Japanese automaker has broadened its horizons.
It bucks the trend of being a smooth-sailing SUV. Rugged through and through, it follows the gritty path of the D-Max. The brand’s reputation for durability and reliability shines through, with the MU-X building on this legacy by offering a powerful engine, strong safety credentials, and meaningful improvements over its predecessor.
Our top-spec MU-X ONYX model came equipped with a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine. Fully capable of 4×4 driving, it’s ready to go wherever adventure calls.
Styling and presence
On looks alone, the MU-X makes a bold impression. With the latest styling updates across the range, it balances adventure-ready toughness with a modern touch.
The front-end features wing-shaped LED daytime-running headlamps that auto-adjust at night, paired with fog lamps, chrome accents, and a gloss-black grille. Towards the rear, 3D LED taillights, rear fog lamps, a high-mounted spotlight, and a subtle spoiler complete the look. The dark chrome accents in particular add a timeless appeal.
Interior and practicality
Inside, the MU-X leans towards function over flair. While rivals like the Ford Everest add more aesthetic “wow factor,” the MU-X prioritises practicality and dependability.
Cabin space is generous, with ample seating and clever folding second- and third-row seats. With all rows up, you get 311L of boot space; drop the second row for 1,119L, and flatten everything for a cavernous 2,138L.
The interior materials feel solid but lack the modern sophistication of competitors. A 7-inch infotainment screen provides Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. However, the tech package lags behind newer Chinese entrants, and even the Isuzu MU-X air conditioning system, while reliable, feels dated in execution.

Performance and ride
Powered by a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine producing 140kW and 450Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the MU-X ONYX delivers power with confidence. It reaches a top speed of 220km/h, though its heavy steering and bakkie-like handling may not suit everyone.
Fuel efficiency is claimed at 7.6L/100km, but our test run returned closer to 9.1L/100km with conservative driving. The 80L fuel tank ensures long-distance range, and with a 3,500kg towing capacity, this SUV is built for heavy hauling and caravanning.
Safety and reliability
With seven airbags, electronic stability control, brake assist, hill start assist, and descent control, the MU-X covers all the safety bases. Isuzu’s strong reputation for affordable maintenance and resale value further reinforces the MU-X as a safe bet for South African buyers.

Verdict
Competing against heavyweights like the Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra Scorpio N, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Ford Everest, the MU-X holds its own thanks to reliability and rugged appeal. It may not win the luxury or tech race, but for those who prize toughness and dependability, it’s a worthy contender.
Pricing starts at R708,000, with the ONYX 4Ă—4 AT topping the range at R960,600. All models include a five-year/90,000 km service plan, a five-year/120,000 km warranty, roadside assistance, and a five-year/unlimited km anti-corrosion warranty.
