SASSA 4th payment date a lifeline for verified Old Age Grant recipients in August

Thousands of elderly grant recipients facing payment delays can now breathe a sigh of relief. SASSA has introduced a special fourth payment date this August for those whose grants were recently verified and reinstated.

As part of a sweeping effort to stabilise South Africa’s social grant system, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has introduced a fourth payment date for the month of August.

The date—Friday, August 8, 2025—will serve as a critical relief mechanism for older persons whose grants were recently verified after being suspended or delayed due to ongoing reviews.

This move follows weeks of public backlash over July’s Older Person’s Grant delays and long queues at local offices.

SASSA CEO issues clarion call for support during August cycle

In a media statement issued 30 July, SASSA CEO Mr. Themba Matlou called on all senior executives and managers across the agency’s nine regions to step away from their desks and actively assist during the August grant review period.

“We are intent in drive to assist all our clients to have their grants reviewed as seamlessly as possible so that no one leaves our offices without being assisted and being burdened with back and forth,” emphasized Matlou.

He stressed the importance of executive visibility, especially as SASSA’s reputation undergoes scrutiny over its ability to serve the most vulnerable.

“We want everyone, especially at the senior level, to get their hands dirty… and ensure timely support for those who may need assistance,” Matlou said.

“The ongoing social grants reviews has put a spotlight on us as an organisation… Whilst the majority of payments will proceed without any hindrance, we want to ensure that we leave no room for tardiness at the expense of the vulnerable.”

Why the 4th payment date matters

This fourth date is part of SASSA’s wider response to nearly 250,000 suspended grants pending income or identity verification. Many beneficiaries missed notifications due to old contact details—SASSA confirms nearly 100,000 SMSes went undelivered.

“SASSA insists that no grants are being cancelled, but merely suspended till rectified.”

SASSA outreach expands: KZN to Pretoria

Alongside its internal reforms, SASSA continues to bring services directly to communities—especially those in rural and underserved areas.

On Friday, August 1, SASSA KwaZulu-Natal participated in a Civic Education Outreach Programme at the Oshabeni MPCC Hall, in partnership with the KZN Legislature and Inkosi Lushaba, under the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality.

The initiative addressed mental health, gender-based violence, and community empowerment, targeting older citizens and vulnerable households.
