SASSA’s notice to elders on new double payment claims as June 2025 grants are confirmed

Strange rumours, new warnings, and official updates — here’s what SASSA wants every elder grant recipient to know this June.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed the June 2025 grant payment dates — and at the same time issued a strong warning to elderly beneficiaries amid a resurgence of two persistent fake claims on social media.

This comes in the wake of recurring rumours that older persons will receive double payments in June, or that “new rules” will come into effect for pensioners from June 10. SASSA has dismissed both as baseless and misleading.

“SASSA can make it categorically clear that there have been no announcements made for double grant payments in June. These reports are untrue and should be rejected with the contempt they deserve,” said Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA’s national spokesperson.

“We appeal to our beneficiaries not to expect any double payments in June as stated in various fake news reports, particularly on social media platforms,” Letsatsi added.

No new rules for elders

Another claim being widely shared online alleges that “New Rules Could Affect Your Pension from June 10.”

“Reports have been spreading like wildfire that SASSA has announced new rules for pensioners from June 10. This is not an official announcement from SASSA,” said Letsatsi.

SASSA reiterated that any major changes to its grant system are only communicated via official statements from the agency or the Department of Social Development.

The facts: June 2025 grant payment dates

SASSA confirmed the following official payment schedule for June 2025:

  • Older Persons Grant – Tuesday, June 3, 2025
  • Disability Grant – Wednesday, June 4, 2025
  • Children’s Grants and all others – Thursday, June 5, 2025

Beneficiaries can collect their funds via direct bank deposits, SASSA cards, or at approved pay points. For safety reasons, SASSA continues to urge citizens not to rush to withdraw funds on payment day.

What’s behind the confusion?

These misleading claims have persisted since May, when similar rumours circulated around older persons grants, prompting to officially confirm that SASSA pension grants will not be doubled, as explained in this this article.

Further confusion was stoked after the reversal of the VAT hike, which sparked fears that SASSA’s earlier old age grant increases might also be reversed.

However, as confirmed in this update, all 2025 grant increases — including for Older Persons, SRD, and Child Support — remain unchanged. The next official increase will only happen in October.

“Any other increase not announced by credible and relevant authorities should be treated as lies,” Letsatsi reiterated.

As detailed in this May update, Older Persons Grants will remain at R2,310 for recipients under 75, and R2,330 for those over 75.

Past verifications misunderstood

Some of the confusion appears to stem from SASSA’s April 30 verification notice, which applied only to specific beneficiaries flagged during the bulk means test or using non-standard forms of identification.

These checks were part of a targeted May review and not a blanket policy for June.

“We appeal to our beneficiaries to only rely on credible sources of information on our official social media pages. Before anyone can share any information pertaining to social grants, they must first verify its authenticity to avoid disseminating false information that may cause anxiety and stress,” Letsatsi said.
