In a joint media statement, Ministers of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi and Social Development Nokuzola Tolashe confirmed the SASSA Gold Card deadline extension from February 28 to now March 20, 2025, following widespread concerns from beneficiaries.

Key updates for beneficiaries

1. New Postbank Black Card: Replace old gold SASSA cards with the Postbank black card by March 20.

2. March 2025 grant payments: Payments will proceed as usual, even after the deadline.

3. Post-deadline access: Beneficiaries who missed the initial deadline must collect grants via Post Office branches

Why the deadline was extended
The ministers acknowledged challenges during the card-swap process, stating:

“We have listened to the deep concerns and frustrations from our social grant beneficiaries and we trust that this extension will provide much needed time for grant recipients.”

Department of Communications spokesperson Kwena Moloto urged prompt action:
We strongly encourage all beneficiaries to make sure that they change to the black Postbank card, as soon as possible and way ahead of the 20th of March to avoid disruptions.”

March 2025 SASSA payment dates
While exact dates are pending confirmation, grants are typically staggered:

  • Older persons grants: 5 March 5
  • Disability grants: March 6
  • Child support & other grants: March 7
  • Upcoming Social Relief of Distress (SRD): February 22 – 28, 2025

Postbank cardholders prioritised: New black card users receive funds first. Delays may occur for those using expired gold cards or cash sends.

Enhanced support

Our departments and entities are working together to add more human capacity and are working with retailers to increase the number of sites across the country.”
