Inspired by the rich African heritage, the theme #ArtAndAfricanSpirit, promises artistic interpretation of Africa’s fashion vibrancy often characterized by bright colors and bold ethnic patterns. - Encounters Fest / Public Figure Premiere
The Encounters South African International Documentary Festival wraps up its 21st edition this weekend. And if you are a staunch fan of Queen B (Bonang Matheba), you should know by now that her first doc-film has been announced as part of the programme. The film will be screened at the Ster-kinekor Nouveau (Rosebank, Johannesburg and V&A, Cape Town) on Saturday and Sunday – June 16 and 17 – respectively, and you sure don’t want to miss it.
Matheba will appear in Johannesburg for a question and answer session, where a high-level international guest panel, which includes Erin Davis, the youngest son of Miles Davis and Vince Wilburn Jr, the late trumpeter’s nephew (Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool) and renowned Swiss director Emmanuelle Antille (A Bright Light: Karen and The Process) is also expected to appear.
The compelling documentary programme will ignite captivating conversations on a range of urgent political and social issues, “often with empathy and deep insight”, a statement from Encounters reads. Likewise, Matheba’s film (Public Figure) interrogates the psychological effects of obsessive social media use, as well as the pros and cons of the “influencer” phenomenon.

- Castle Lite Unlocks; no excuse to party
Forget the dangerous cold spell that could see temperatures dropping to as low as -1 degree this weekend, hip hop fans are gearing up the biggest gathering of its kind this weekend, the 2019 Castle Lite Unlocks and it’s clear nothing, we mean nothing will spoil their party mood. Better still, Castle Lite issued a statement allaying fears that US rapper Meek Mill might not make it to the event, stating: “Castle Lite is aware of questions raised by some consumers on social media regarding Meek Mill’s appearance in South Africa. As revealed two weeks ago, the rapper, songwriter and activist will close off day 1 of Castle Lite Unlocks. While rapper and producer, Post Malone, will shut down the extra-cold experience on day 2.”
Taking place on June 17 and 18 (Monday and Tuesday), the Castle Lite Unlocks experience has evolved into a two-day hip hop experience encompassing everything hip-hop in one place.
