Thousands of Gauteng parents could face disappointment when Grade 1 and Grade 8 placement offers start going out in October.
The province received 805,688 applications for the 2027 academic year. But the Gauteng Department of Education has limited space at many popular schools.
Parents should understand the Gauteng placement criteria before assuming an application guarantees a place.
The applications represented 346,877 individual learners, including 169,396 Grade 1 learners and 177,481 Grade 8 learners.
Some schools attracted thousands of applications despite having limited capacity.
Why some Gauteng schools cannot take every applicant
Hoërskool Langenhoven in Tshwane West received 3,462 Grade 8 applications, according to figures presented by the department.
Alberton High received 2,756, while Katlehong Secondary School received 2,747 applications.
The pressure also extends to primary schools. Laerskool Akasia received 1,355 Grade 1 applications, while Palmridge Primary received 1,330.
Education MEC Lebogang Maile said these figures show where parental demand and population growth are concentrated.
“We cannot sustain a situation where one public school is overwhelmed by thousands of applications while another public school, sometimes only a few kilometres away, has available classrooms or declining enrolment.”
Maile said an application to a popular school cannot create additional classrooms.
“Popular schools cannot infinitely absorb learners.”
What happens if all your choices are full?
The GDE’s admissions process provides for alternative placement when learners cannot be accommodated at the schools their parents selected.
Parents of unplaced learners will receive alternative placement offers at schools with available space.
The official admissions calendar schedules this stage from November 2 to November 20, 2026.
The department will send offers by SMS, and parents can also view them through their profile on the admissions system.
Parents are advised to accept each offer within seven days.
This means parents should keep the cellphone number used during the application active and regularly check their admissions profile.
Can parents object to an alternative school?
Parents who are transferred to an alternative school can lodge an objection.
The official GDE timetable allows objections from November 2 to December 1, 2026. Parents whose objections are unsuccessful can then submit an appeal.
The appeal period also runs from November 2, with the final deadline set for December 15, 2026.
Parents should therefore act within the prescribed periods if they are unhappy with an alternative placement.

The department has also provided a separate process for incomplete applications.
Applicants who did not submit proof of residence during the application period will be placed at schools where spaces remain during the relevant processing period.
Gauteng wants parents to look beyond popular schools
The large number of applications has pushed school capacity back into focus.
Maile said Gauteng needs to improve schools across the province rather than continually expanding a small number of sought-after institutions.
“Our task is to make every public school a school that parents are willing to choose.”
He said quality education depends on more than classrooms. Effective school management, committed educators, discipline, infrastructure and parental involvement also matter.
The province is considering several responses to capacity pressures, including prefabricated and mobile classrooms as short-term measures.
Maile said these options should not replace long-term infrastructure investment.

For now, parents should watch their SMS notifications and admissions profiles closely.
An unsuccessful application to a preferred school does not necessarily mean a learner will remain without a public-school place.
The GDE’s process is designed to move unplaced learners into schools with available capacity, followed by opportunities to object and appeal where an alternative placement is disputed.
