The court heard that Majola will remain behind bars as the case proceeds.
As shown in our X post below, NOWinSA was exclusively at court to cover the appearance and the official laying of charges.
During proceedings, Majola was instructed to remove a vibrant scarf that had been covering most of his face. He complied reluctantly, a moment that drew audible reaction inside the courtroom. Images from the appearance quickly circulated online, sparking intense debate — particularly around the suspect’s appearance.
Some users questioned why the suspect no longer had dreadlocks, a detail police had previously highlighted after reviewing CCTV footage from the day of the killing. One user asked: “Wasn’t he supposed to be on dreadlocks? Are we being sent on a wild goose chase, another Senzo Meyiwa RIP?” Others pointed out that dreadlocks can be easily removed, particularly once suspect details are publicly known.
Who is the suspect?
As captured in the NOWinSA X post below Majola was forced to remove the scarf covering his face — reluctantly complying — as murmurs rippled through court, with some questioning why the suspect no longer had dreadlocks, a key detail earlier released by police.
Following the court appearance, attention shifted to Majola’s background and origins, which became a flashpoint online.
It is believed Majola is a South African from Nquthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal, close to DJ Warras’ hometown of Vryheid. The claim triggered heated debate, with some users rejecting it outright and accusing authorities of presenting a “decoy suspect”.
Despite speculation and online disputes, police have confirmed that Majola has been formally charged, marking the first major breakthrough in the investigation.
A case already heavy with politics
The court appearance comes days after the murder took on sharper political weight, when police confirmed suspect details and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture and Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie publicly linked the killing to hijacked buildings in Johannesburg’s CBD.
Those remarks intensified a national conversation about violent crime, accountability and urban lawlessness — placing the DJ Warras case at the centre of a wider reckoning.
As investigations continue and further court proceedings loom, NOWinSA will remain on the ground following developments in a case that has shaken the country and raised urgent questions about safety and justice.
