Limpopo Tourism turns to influencers to prove it’s chock-full of local adventure

Limpopo Tourism Agency's recent marketing drive with a host of local celebrities, bloggers and journos pivoting their social media platforms to showcase “authentic” local travel adventures proved just how the use of influencers could save the future of South African hospitality and tourism in COVID-19 reality.

Having spent just over six months in hard lockdown, there’s no doubt that local travel enthusiasts have been itching to hit the road, especially with our international borders now open under Level 1 Lockdown

While it might be tempting to hop on a plane at the first available opportunity, for many South Africans international travel remains on hold for the foreseeable future.

Lucky for us, South Africa is chock-full of local adventure, just as the #GoLimpopo tourism drive – with support from the likes of actress Bonnie Mbuli, LGBTQ+ social entrepreneur Thami Kotlolo, internationally renowned dancer and Breaking Down Borders Africa founder Paul Modjadji, music superstar Zakes Bantwini and social media activist Tumi Sole – managed to prove.

Just as Dr Nomvuselelo Songelwa, CEO of the recently established tourism data management hub, Jurni, recently pointed out, one of the best things South Africans can do to play their part in promoting local tourism is to speak up regarding their travel experiences.

“Tourists can share joyful videos of themselves and their loved ones enjoying their getaway on social media, being sure to tag the relevant establishments and to make their posts shareable,” she said.

Below is what some of SA’s much-loved showbiz personalities got up to as they recently took a “sho’t left” to the bountiful province of Limpopo, reminding us that South Africa indeed has thrilling destinations and yet to be explored tourism gems.

Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve

As actress and television personality Bonnie Mbuli alluded, Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve in Tzaneen, Limpopo is all the rage at the moment for those looking to not only take a glimpse into the remarkable world of natural phenomenon and enjoy the scenic mountainous landscapes, but cap their visit with a refreshing, carefree swim in a natural pool.

Leeuwenhof Country Lodge & Garden Spa

This romantic country getaway is renowned for its architectural features, tranquil comfort and beauty just as it’s a haven for outdoor and fitness enthusiants looking for a perfect base for their next adventure – all thanks to the scenic mountainous bike and hiking trails.

Magoebaskloof

Once described as ‘the Land of the silver mist’ by the famous Scottish novelist John Buchan, Magoebaskloof is a lush green mountainous area named after Chief Makgoba, and true to form it’s chock-full of adventure.

You can simply start your day’s exploits by taking a scenic trail through the ever-green forest along the meandering R71, and of course support street vendors and local farmers along the way by picking up freshly cut flowers (just like my good friend Paul Modjadji did) at a fraction of the cost, before ending your journey – a few miles down the road – with a cold flavorsome craft beer at Zwakala Brewery.

Bushveld Terrance Restaurant on Kruger

Perfectly positioned just less than 300m from the Kruger National Park’s Phalaborwa gate, Bushveld Terrace has a nice, unexpected touch of luxury; from their tasty and good food quality, to the striking safari-inspired restaurant deco, and the elegant ‘spacious’ rooms with to-die-for nignt-time views – you name it!
