Best sun safety lessons from dermatologists favourite sunscreen

Dermatologists' favourite sunscreen brand Heliocare and Sorbet hosted the Ultimate Pool Party to launch the “Don't Skip the Sunscreen” campaign - to encourage everyone to make sun safety a habit.

One of the world most medically recommended sunscreens Heliocare partnered with the proudly South African beauty company, Sorbet, to launch the Ultimate Pool Party at Maracanã in Sandton, Johannesburg to introduce the ‘Don’t Skip the Sunscreen’ campaign.

Addressing attendees, Sorbet brand manager Kirsten Wills emphasised the significance of sun-care, stressing the importance of incorporating sun protection into one’s daily skincare routine.

Sunburns and sun damage over prolonged period can increases one’s risk to several skin ailments such as melanoma, rapidly aging skin, and worse still skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma.

By incorporating sunscreen into their daily lives before going in the sun, she said it’s important for consumers to know “they’re not just pampering their skin, but also taking an essential step in protecting their long-term health and beauty”.

Highly recommended by many dermatologists around the world, Heliocare products have been the subject of extensive clinical research. As highlighted in this article by Pubmed, unlike other products in this category, it’s the information from its research available widely that enables medical practitioners to determine the suitability of incorporating it into skin care regimens for patients.

Skincare experts often recommend Heliocare SPFGel SPF 50 products such as the Advanced Spray (above) and Gel.

Below are some tips and benefits of using sunscreen, courtesy of Heliocare.

  •  It helps to reduce skin from harmful UV rays.
  •  It prevents premature aging; UV rays can cause wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots
  • It prevents sunburn: painful, red skin is no fun and can lead to long-term damage.
  • It helps prevent skin cancer: UV exposure is a leading cause of skin cancer
  • While the jury is still out as to weather higher-SPF products are worth buying, they are said to be marginally better at shielding users from both UVA and UVB. As such skincare experts often recommend Heliocare SPF 50 products (Advanced Gel SPF 50 and Heliocare Advanced Spray SPF 50) for easy extended outdoor activities. The brand also has Oral Capsules in the SPF 50 range.

NOWinSA Suncare Fact

While it seems like an SPF of over 50 to 100 would provide up to double the protection, the truth is that higher-SPF products are only marginally better at shielding you from ultraviolet, or UV rays, which cause sunburn and over time plays a key role in developing skin cancer. This is according to both the EWG and the Skin Cancer Foundation recent study, which found that properly applied SPF 30 blocks nearly 97% of UVB radiation, SPF 50 blocks about 98%, and SPF 100 blocks about 99%. This is why FDA proposed in 2011 prohibiting labels higher than SPF 50+.
