Nominees for the 2024 edition of the South African Social Media Awards were announced on Friday during an exclusive celebration at the fully-packed Kream restaurant at the Mall of Africa, Johannesburg.
Not without some fair share of controversy as organisers find themselves having to fend-off the controversial inclusion of US-based food influencer Nara Smith, this year’s awards feature a variety of categories designed to honour excellence in social media and digital communication from South Africa – with few exceptions such as Nigerian music superstar Davido, the world’s most-followed Tik-Tokker, Senegalese-born Khaby Lame (now based in Italy) with over 160 million TikTok followers at the time of publishing, Ugandan actress and media personality Angella Summer Namubiru – in the African social Media Star of the Year category.
