Old Mutual drops popular South African YouTuber after ‘transphobic’ slurs

South African insurance giant Old Mutual has terminated "with immediate effect" its sponsorship of YouTube podcaster MacG following offensive comments towards trans people, made between him and co-host Sol Phenduka in the latest episode of his 'Podcast and Chill' show.

In a statement also posted on the company’s official Twitter account, Old Mutual said it distances itself from any harmful commentary made against the LGBTQI+ community.

Furthermore, the insurance company called MacG’s commentary “ignorant and insensitive”, and said more education needed to take place with regard to LGBTQ+ matters, more so in a country where people continue to be “ostracized killed, abused and raped for being who they are”.

While Twitter appears to be devided about the matter, as seen in the commentary thread below, several celebrities have lambasted the presenters for their transphobic comments, with actress Thando Thabethe saying she’s disgusted and wishes she could “unsee that MacG show”.
