Missing Vosloorus shop owner Mazwi Kubheka found alive

Missing for nearly a month, Mazwi Kubheka has reappeared at a Vosloorus police station as investigators work to establish what happened.

Mazwi Mpumelelo Kubheka has been found alive after weeks of uncertainty, bringing relief to his family and community after a disappearance that sparked widespread protests.

Gauteng police confirmed on Saturday evening that Kubheka presented himself at the Vosloorus Police Station. This follows a surge of online appeals and street demonstrations calling for his safe return.

“Mazwi has been found and is at the Vosloorus police station,” police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed, as detailed in our social media (X) update below.

Authorities have not yet disclosed where Kubheka was or the circumstances surrounding his return. Investigators continue to piece together events leading up to his disappearance and the days that followed.

Disappearance sparks community outrage

Kubheka, 27, went missing on April 2, 2026, after leaving his home to deposit money at a bank. He was last seen in Marimba Gardens. While police questioned two individuals shortly after the disappearance, they made no arrests.

The case quickly became a flashpoint for community tensions in the East Rand. Family members and residents alleged that suspects targeted him following a dispute involving a local spaza shop. Kubheka had recently taken over a business space previously occupied by foreign nationals.

The intense public pressure drew comparisons to the Joshlin Smith trial where developments intensified scrutiny on how law enforcement handles missing persons cases.

Police and intelligence structures continue probe

SAPS Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni announced the development on Saturday night, stressing that the investigation remains active.

“Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance,” a police spokesperson confirmed.

The search recently reached the highest levels of government. On Friday, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni confirmed that national Crime Intelligence units had joined the search. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi also mobilised resources, vowing that authorities would hold those responsible to account.

Lingering questions over spaza shop dispute

While his safe return answers the most urgent question, it leaves several others unresolved. Community members, led by groups such as ActionSA and the Truth and Solidarity Movement, previously alleged that an “extortion mafia” or business rivals may have played a role in his disappearance.

For now, police are debriefing Kubheka to understand the timeline of the past weeks of his disappearance. His family has not yet issued a formal public statement following his return to the Vosloorus station.
