Quinones punishes early defensive lapse
Mexico struck first in the ninth minute when Julian Quinones punished a defensive error to score the opening goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Sithole lost possession on the edge of his own penalty area, allowing Quinones to drill a low shot through Williams’ legs.
The hosts had already threatened through Raul Jimenez, who forced a sharp save from Williams in the fifth minute.
The Azteca crowd roared Mexico forward as Bafana struggled to settle.
Williams kept South Africa in the match before half-time, denying Jimenez’s header and watching Quinones strike the post.
Bafana’s best moments came through Lyle Foster, whose header drifted wide in the 38th minute, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, whose long-range effort forced a comfortable save.
Mexico led 1-0 at the interval.
Three red cards sink Bafana in chaotic second half
South Africa’s task became significantly harder shortly after the restart.
Sithole brought down Brian Gutierrez as the last defender, earning a straight red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.
Mexico made their numerical advantage count in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado’s pinpoint cross found Jimenez, who powered home a header to double the hosts’ lead and effectively put the result beyond reach.
The evening deteriorated further for Bafana when substitute Themba Zwane received a red card following a VAR review for striking Alvarado in the face, reducing South Africa to nine men.
Mexico defender Cesar Montes also saw red deep into stoppage time for a professional foul on Khuliso Mudau.
The match ended with three red cards, capping one of the most ill-disciplined World Cup opening matches in recent memory.

Williams: ‘Mistakes will hurt you at this level’
Despite the scoreline, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced several important saves that prevented a heavier defeat.
After the match, he acknowledged the lessons facing the South Africans.
“If you make mistakes, they will punish you. They will hurt you at this level.”
The result leaves Mexico top of Group A after the opening round. South Africa sit bottom with a negative goal difference and two suspensions to manage.
Bafana must quickly regroup before their crucial second group match against Czechia in Atlanta on June 18.

What the loss means for Bafana
For Bafana Bafana, the return to the World Cup delivered valuable experience but also a clear warning: small mistakes are often the difference between competing and surviving on football’s biggest stage.
Sithole will miss the Czechia clash through suspension. Zwane likely faces a multi-match ban.
Coach Hugo Broos must now reshape his midfield and defence with limited time before the next fixture.
South Africa’s World Cup campaign is far from over. But after one costly night at Estadio Azteca, there is no longer any room for error.
