The much awaited trailer for the Hellboy reboot, along with a new still (poster) from the film officially launches in South Africa today and it appears to be a mix bag for fans and critics alike.
The reboot for Hellboy has been tauted as a more faithful adaptation of Mignola’s comics and finds Hellboy caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human as he battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.
Directed by Game of Thrones’ Neil Marshall, Hellboy stars David Harbour as the title character, Milla Jovovich as Nimue the Blood Queen and Ian McShane as Professor Bruttenholm.
A property of Dark Horse Comics, the film hits South African cinemas on April 12, 2019. However, fans and critics alike appear devided as to whether the final product will be any good. While majority describes it as way too standard – for failing to deliver an R-rated affair as promised back in 2017 – with some saying they are forcing comedy into it, others seem to agree that it’s going to be worth their efforts.
“Hellboy certainly isn’t lacking in excitement and thrills, but the tone of the trailer is a sharp contrast to what we’ve been sold on this movie being: a darker, more horror-infused tale,” according to a review by New York based movie critic Adam Holmes on cinemablend.com.
“First off, the tone of this Hellboy trailer comes off as energetic rather than scary. Even ignoring the strange song choice, Billy Idol’s Mony Mony,” adds Holmes. However, a handful of fans appear not so much bothered by the homourous tone of the film, as one Hellboy fanatic Spike Marshall, – @SpikeMarksall – indicated in this tweet: “I feel like everybody complaining about the tone of the new #HELLBOY trailer possibly haven’t read the comics. Which are super goofy and fun.”
