For most executives, a long-haul flight means catching up on emails or grabbing a few hours of sleep before the next meeting. For Theo Mseka, it can be where the music begins.
The South African tech CEO is also DJ MidTempo, an artist whose debut album turns a demanding corporate lifestyle into an unlikely source of musical inspiration.
His story reflects a growing reality in the South African music scene: being multi-skilled is no longer a contradiction. It can be a genuine pathway to opportunity.
By day, Mseka operates in the high-pressure world of corporate leadership as CEO and Managing Director of immowelt and AVIV Germany GmbH, one of Germany’s leading real estate technology groups.
He is a recognised SA real estate professional with more than two decades of experience across digital advertising, e-commerce and online marketplaces.
Away from the boardroom, he becomes DJ MidTempo — a vinyl collector, producer and founder of Tahoe Studios.
His sound moves between Afro House, Afro Tech, Amapiano, 3-Step and electronic influences.
Now those two worlds meet on his debut album, Cheza Kidogo, a 12-track project due on 11 September 2026 via Tahoe Studios.
Mseka estimates that about 70% of the album took shape while he was travelling, much of it on flights between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Berlin.
Laptop open, headphones on and somewhere above the clouds, the CEO becomes the DJ.
An album made in the air
The story behind Cheza Kidogo gets more unusual the closer you look.
One of its most distinctive tracks, “Bu Islak Sokaklarda”, was written entirely at roughly 33,000 feet.
The Turkish-language song draws its lyrics from a poem written by a close friend during Mseka’s five years working with Turkish real-estate platform Hepsiemlak.
The track captures the spirit of an artist constantly moving between countries, cultures and identities.
It also offers a glimpse into how Mseka’s corporate career has influenced his musical journey.
South African music remains at the heart of Cheza Kidogo
Despite his international corporate career and deep ties to Berlin, Cheza Kidogo repeatedly returns to South Africa.
Tracks with a strong local focus include “Zimbali“, featuring Deestar ZA, Luvintage and K.D.M Luminous; “Nobody Else” with August Muzika, Wade Yarrow and Maijor Habe; “Sabela” with Kamza HeavyPoint and Yarah Lerah; “Zaka” with August Muzika and NATASHA MD; and “Durban Nights” with Rocktea and Still Matah.
Through Tahoe Studios, Mseka is not only building the DJ MidTempo name; he is also creating opportunities for African artists to reach audiences beyond the continent.
That balance between local identity and international ambition runs through the album.
What to expect from DJ MidTempo’s debut album
Listeners can expect Cheza Kidogo to resist easy categorisation. African rhythm sits at its core, while Berlin’s club sensibility adds another layer. Mseka’s experience behind the decks ties the different influences together.
The lead single, “Nobody Else”, combines Afro-driven production with English vocals designed to travel beyond a single market. It offers a strong indication of the direction of the wider project.
The album also contains deeply personal moments.
“Kalemela” pays tribute to the village in Tanzania’s Mwanza region where Mseka’s father is from. The title also echoes the Greek word for “good morning”, linking the song to Thessaloniki, where Mseka was born on 11 September at 3:05am.
He has turned that detail into a ritual of sorts. Whenever his DJ sets run past 3:05am, “Kalemela” is the track that plays.
DJ MidTempo and a different kind of creative freedom
Unlike many emerging artists, Mseka’s livelihood does not depend on his next booking or the latest streaming trend.
His established executive career gives DJ MidTempo the freedom to create on his own terms. He brings the same ambition and strategic thinking that shaped his corporate career to his music.
That raises an intriguing question: what happens when someone who has already succeeded in one demanding world decides to start again in another?
Cheza Kidogo suggests the answer may be worth dancing to.
