Thierry Henry’s deep connection to South Africa

Henry’s presence added a unique layer of glamour to the occasion. His history with the country stretches back decades.

Many will remember he scored his first-ever international goals for France against Bafana Bafana back in 1998.

As we highlighted in our previous coverage of the Johannesburg press conference, he has experienced the vibrancy and passion of South Africa several times before, notably during the 2010 World Cup.

He has made frequent visits since. Yet, this marked his first Soweto Derby.

Betway officially confirmed the football legend’s attendance to witness South Africa’s biggest club rivalry firsthand.

The Soweto Derby has become South Africa’s ultimate celebration of football unity, bridging fierce rivalries to honor the country’s two biggest clubs.

Today, that electric atmosphere reached a fever pitch when global icon Thierry Henry walked onto the pitch, met by roaring screams that proved how true fans can set aside their differences to embrace a legend of his undeniable calibre.

On the pitch, the match delivered the expected intensity. Chiefs’ Inácio Miguel was sent off late in the game as frustration boiled over. Pirates held on to secure the bragging rights.
