Royalty Soapie 2023 nominees; The River look to dethrown Gomora, Skeem Saam to reclaim top spot

2023 is the year 'The River' look to reclaim its top spot in South Africa's list of most popular television shows as it becomes the most nominated show with over 30 nods in the 6th edition of The Royalty Soapie Awards, with 'The Estate' tallying behind with 23 nominations.

The past two awards has seen Gomora and ‘Skeem Saam‘ make an impressive splash at the Royalty Soapie Awards as they took home the award’s major honour as South Africa’s most popular TV Shows for the 4th and 5th editions respectively.

Now the competition it’s about to get stiffer as The River is looking to reclaim leading spot as South Africa’s most popular soapie as it bags over 30 nods for this year’s 6th edition, including Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress for Presley Chweneyagae as Cobra and Tsholofelo Matshaba as Kedibone, as well as Viewer’s Choice Best Actor and Actress respectively for Lawrence Maleka as Zolani Dlamini, Lunga Mofokeng as Andile Dikana, as well as Ferry Jele as Veronica, Lunathi Mampofu as Emma, Sindi Dlathu as Lindiwe Dlamini-Dikana, Tango Ncetezo as Paulina, Tinah Mnumzana as Flora, and Nokuthula Mavuso as Angelina.

This is by far the highest number of nominations received by one production, with ‘The Estate’ talling behind with 23.

The Black Door‘ is next with 16 nominations, followed closely by ‘Gomora‘ with 15, while past big winners, ‘DiepCity‘ and ‘Skeem Saam‘ instead equalised with 12 nominations.

Featuring a diverse mix of South African television creatives, including actors, and behind-the-scenes technical teams, the annual awards celebrates the hard work they put into producing the excellent work we interact with on our screens daily.

The date for this year’s official ceremony is set for Saturday, March 11, with public voting lines already opened and set to close at 12 pm on March 8, 2023.

The Public vote categories – namely the Viewer’s Choice Best Actor and Viewer’s Choice Best Actress awards and Best TV favourite Show – are sponsored by Lottoland, and will see three lucky public voters stand a chance to win and rub shoulders with the who’s who of the entertainment industry and enjoy the full VIP and red-carpet experience at the awards official  ceremony.
