The Galaxy Watch continues to garner praise despite flurry of launches

WITH excitement around the recent unveiling of the Galaxy S10 series at the February 20 Unpacked event nowhere near waning, Samsung entered the week with another round of exciting news. Justin Hume, director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa was ecstatic to announce that the Galaxy Watch has been awarded the Best Wearable Mobile Technology at the annual Global Mobile Awards (Glomo Awards) – at Mobile World Congress 2019.

The news come as no surprise given that the gadget, positioned as the tech giant’s flagship smartwatch, is equipped with the best of Samsung’s centralised Galaxy ecosystem – with long lasting battery life, attractive O-LED display and great wellness features.

“The Galaxy Watch is an exceptional example of technology that makes life better and the award is recognition of Samsung’s relentless pursuit of innovation. As a human-centred company, we’re proud to create products that help people do more,” says Hume.

From notifying you when you get a phone call, to letting you tap to pay using Samsung Pay, and tracking your steps and heart rate during exercise, the Galaxy watch is indeed a powerful smartwatch with a serious WOW-factor for those who want to do it all.

More fitness-focused wearables on the way

The announcement comes hardly two weeks after Samsung unveiled a series wearables to add to their catalog: a fitness tracker (Galaxy Fit), a fitness-focused smart watch (Galaxy Watch Active), and a pair of Bluetooth headphones (Galaxy Buds).

The Galaxy Watch Active is Samsung’s second wearable to the Galaxy Watch series after it rebranded and dumped the “Galaxy Gear” moniker. Unlike the more perkier Galaxy Watch, the Active is lighter and geared towards lower-end users trying to get or stay in shape – simply put, it isn’t an extension of your smartphone.

At $200, it is $129 cheaper than the original Galaxy Watch, and will be released on Friday (March 8). However, customers can place their preorder via Samsung online store.
