IEC live results 2026: ANC holds slight lead as Gauteng metros hang in the balance

The ANC holds a slight lead nationally with the DA right behind, but control of Gauteng's metros — Johannesburg and Tshwane — remains too close to call. Track the IEC's live results dashboard as the count comes in.

JOHANNESBURG — The IEC live results 2026 dashboard is sharpening the picture of South Africa’s local government landscape, though control of the country’s economic hubs remains far from settled.

According to the IEC’s live results dashboard, the African National Congress currently holds 32.1% of the national vote, with the Democratic Alliance trailing at 28.6%.

While the ANC leads in overall support, the DA is showing significant strength in key metros, particularly in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The IEC confirmed that approximately 15.9 million voters cast their ballots, translating to a 54.5% turnout—a substantial increase from the 46% recorded in 2021.

This follows a weekend of intense electioneering rallies in Soweto and across the country, where voters were locked in and finalising their election plans ahead of the final votes countdown.

The national aggregate masks fierce contests at the local level. In Johannesburg, with only 11% of voting districts counted, the DA is currently commanding 40.5% of the vote, far ahead of the ANC’s 17.2%.

Similarly, in Tshwane, ActionSA and the ANC are locked in a tight race at roughly 26.9% each, while the DA follows closely.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) is maintaining a strong presence, currently holding 6.1% nationally and leading in the province, complicating the ANC’s path to outright control in the region.

Tracking the Numbers

As of Thursday afternoon, the IEC dashboard shows the results process is moving faster than in previous cycles.

With roughly a third of voting districts declared, 34 councils are hung, meaning no single party has secured an outright majority.

Voting proceeded well across the country at all 23,696 voting stations, with the IEC reporting no major disruptions to the process.

Voters and analysts can track the ward-by-ward breakdown in real-time via the IEC Results Portal.

The dashboard is updated continuously as verification officers finalize counts.
