Three of the best activations at Africa’s greatest horse racing event

With the Durban July racing weekend in full swing, we take a look at three of the most fun filled and creative activations hosted around South Africa's greatest horse racing event

  • Vodacom Red Experience

As the headline sponsor for the annual event, Vodacom is going out in full force. Dubbed Africa’s greatest horse racing event for a good reason, the cellular operator is running a campaign (competition) which will afford 10 of its subscribers a chance to win an exclusive lifestyle experiences at this year’s event, valued at R80 500 for them and a partner. Prizes include a return trip (five star journey) from Johannesburg (Friday, July 5) to Durban on the iconic Blue Train and a return on Monday, July 8. The trip includes return luxury transfers from home to the Pretoria Station and to other planned activities, three nights accommodation, entry to the Grayville Racecourse, food and drinks and entertainment on the day of the race.

The Vodacom Red Experience, for specially invited Vodacom guests, will not only afford guests a chance to mingle with the who’s who of the South African business and entertainment worlds. The marque will feature some of Africa’s most creative minds, among them renowned African designer Osborne Macharia and South Africa’s own MaXhosa Africa (below right), Rich Factory (below left) and Sindiso Khumalo as they unveil their latest collection – in line with the “Stars of Africa” theme – capturing what it means to be a true African star. They’ll be joined by SA’s ‘it’ boy Maps Maponyane and beauty queen Liesl Laurie for an unforgettable date with the most.

  • Boomtown Presented by Heineken

Back for its 11th year rendition, the Boomtown marquee is widely recognized for providing the ultimate in expert hospitality, and world-class production without any fail, with an immissable lineup of some of Mzansi’s top musical entertainers to match.  This included the likes of Lady Zamar, Kwesta, Sjava, Busiswa, Sun-El, Black Motion; Mlindo the Vocalist, Da Capo; Sumbody and Benny Maverick, Holly Rey and many more.

Hot on the heels of the recently launched non-alcoholic offering, Heineken 0.0, the new partnership will serve as a perfect platform for the world-famous beer brand to encourage responsible life choices. In line with this surprising move, a number of activations have been planned on the day to give avid beer fans something new and that which will also be kind to their waistline, all the while getting them in a perfect party mood. Introduced in South Africa back in April, the aim is to show party goers that “yes, it is possible to stay in control while having fun with” and what better way to do that than with the now in-demand no-alcohol beer with all the flavor (hops and malt) but without the booze!

  • Engen Durban July Takeover

Passionate about creating a better South Africa, Engen’s journey to boost the local economy – in this case KwaZulu-Natal – came to the fore with the announcement of a three-year partnership with Africa’s greatest horse racing event as its official fuel partner thatcis.

Voted South Africa’s ‘Coolest Petroleum Brand’ for the past 10 years in the Sunday Times Generation Next survey and South Africa’s ‘Favorite Petrol Station’ for 9 consecutive years in the Sunday Times Top Brand Survey, the sponsorship provides Engen with a platform to actively engage with their customers and stakeholders, while supporting an iconic KZN event.

The company will use the platform to interact with its customers and stakeholders and offer them value-adding experiences, says Bulela Mkandawire, Engen brand and sponsorship manager. As such, Engen will also be hosting some of its key stakeholders and business partners in the region at the event, including Neville Matjie, CEO of Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal. Most of the Engen activations will take place in the public area, as well as in the Engen lounge, where guests can watch the horse racing, enjoy an exciting entertainment line-up and have some amazing photo opportunities.
