Netflix debuts its first African stand up comedy original with Loyiso Gola

Two-time Emmy nominee Loyiso Gola is back on Netflix with his critically acclaimed comedy hour, 'Unlearning', first African stand up comedy debuty globally on the world's largest subscription streaming service on Tuesday (February 23)

One of South Africa’s most popular stand-up comedians, Gola is the first African to have a solo full hour of stand up comedy on Netflix and that’s not all – this is the first African original for 2021!

The special, which see the Gugulethu born and raised comedian explore his own experience of maturity and masculinity during apartheid in South Africa, first debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 before proceeding to London’s Soho Theatre in 2018 where he had several sold out runs, followed shortly by The Globe in Durban and the Cape Town ICC – as well as the Soho Playhouse in New York in 2019.

Following the crazy year that was 2020, Gola brought his special to his hometown, Cape Town, with filming taking place in front of socially-distanced live audience – on December 8 and 9 – at the famed Zeits Mocca.
