Johannesburg, South Africa – South African Airways (SAA) has been hit with major disruptions as a pilots’ strike commenced Thursday, following a breakdown in wage negotiations.
The industrial action has affected flights on all major domestic and regional routes, leaving passengers stranded and raising concerns about the future of the already struggling airline.
The South African Airways Pilots’ Association (SAAPA), representing a majority of SAA pilots, is demanding an 8% salary increase, while the airline is offering 5.9%. SAAPA argues that their members have not received a salary increase in several years, stating that the current offer fails to address the rising cost of living.
“Our pilots have endured years of financial stagnation while the cost of living continues to climb,” stated Grant Back, SAAPA Chairperson, in an interview with eNCA. “This strike is about securing a fair and just wage increase that reflects the dedication and expertise of our members.”
SAA, which exited business rescue in April 2021, has been battling financial challenges for years. The airline maintains that it cannot afford the pilots’ demands, and that acceding to them would jeopardize its fragile recovery.
“SAA is not in a position to meet SAAPA’s demands without compromising the long-term sustainability of the airline,” said Professor John Lamola, SAA’s interim CEO, in a statement released Wednesday. “We urge SAAPA to return to the negotiating table and engage constructively to find a solution that is in the best interests of all parties.”
The strike has caused significant disruption to travel plans, with numerous flights cancelled or delayed. Passengers have expressed frustration and uncertainty, with many scrambling to make alternative arrangements. The strike’s impact on the South African economy is also a growing concern, as SAA is a key player in the country’s tourism and business travel sectors.
SAAPA has indicated that the strike will continue indefinitely until their demands are met. Negotiations between the airline and the union are expected to resume in the coming days, but a swift resolution remains uncertain.
Contingency plans in place for affected passengers
In the wake of the strike, SAA has announced the cancelation of some flights, including Perth, Australia and São Paulo, Brazil and recommendations on the other airlines.
As the situation remains fluid, passengers are advised to:
- Check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
- Contact SAA or their travel agent to explore alternative travel options.
- Remain informed about developments through official SAA channels and news sources.
