Capitec name change gazetted: what it means for everyday customers

The Prudential Authority has gazetted Capitec’s shortened name, but customers will see no change to their accounts, cards or app. The shift signals a broader ambition.

Capitec’s new name is now official, but customers will notice no difference to their everyday banking.

The Prudential Authority gazetted the change from Capitec Bank Holdings Limited to Capitec Limited on October 2, 2026, in line with the Banks Act of 1990.

“Notice is hereby given, for general information, that Capitec Bank Holdings Limited, registered as a controlling company in terms of section 44 of the Banks Act, changed its name to Capitec Limited with effect from 1 August 2026,” the gazette said.

The confirmation has arrived a day after Home Affairs announced its deadline to phase out green IDs, another major development affecting millions of South Africans.

Capitec first confirmed the Capitec name change to shareholders in August 2026 through a SENS announcement, following its annual general meeting (AGM) on July 31.

The change applies to the holding company, rather than the Capitec brand customers use every day.

What the Capitec name change means for customers

Your Capitec account is not changing. Accounts, account numbers and existing cards remain active.

The Capitec app, digital channels and branches continue to operate as usual, and customers do not need to take any action because of the corporate name change.

The group has also retained its banking operations and regulatory status, so the change does not mean customers are moving to a new bank.

For shareholders, the change has also caused little disruption.

Capitec Limited began trading under the new name on August 26, 2026, while its JSE ticker remains CPI.

The company has also retained its shareholder register and trading history.

Capitec’s latest results show the scale of the business behind the familiar brand.

Active clients reached 26.6 million in the six months to August 31, 2026, making it South Africa’s largest bank by customer base.

Why Capitec has dropped “Bank” from its name

The Capitec Limited name change reflects the group’s push beyond traditional banking.

“Indicative of our journey beyond traditional banking is the recent name change from Capitec Bank Holdings Limited to Capitec Limited,” the company said in its interim financial results.

“This reflects our growing focus on delivering a wider range of value-adding solutions to our clients.”

That expansion has already moved beyond conventional banking services.

Capitec has expanded Smart ID services to 248 branches in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs and has processed more than 594,000 Smart ID applications since the service launched in March 2026.

The bank was among the first two banks to offer the service, alongside FNB, for just over six months.

Capitec has described these developments as part of its commitment to “being more than a bank”, with services designed to add value to customers’ everyday lives.

The group has also launched a Capitec Stokvel Account, while Capitec Connect has continued to grow its telecommunications offering.

Its latest results show 1.8 million active Capitec Connect clients over the three months to August 31.

Capitec, Smart ID and the green ID deadline

The timing of the Capitec name change is notable because the group has also become increasingly involved in services outside traditional banking.

The Home Affairs deadline means production of the green ID book will end on March 31, 2027.

The department has been working with banks including Capitec, Standard Bank, FNB and Absa to expand access to Smart ID services.

For millions of grant recipients, the transition is also significant.

SASSA can now verify beneficiary identity details against Home Affairs records in less than a second. NOWinSA previously reported on the Smart ID switch.

Capitec’s broader expansion means customers can increasingly access banking, connectivity, identity services and other financial products through the same ecosystem.

For everyday customers, however, the immediate impact of the Capitec name change is minimal.

Your account, card and app remain the same.

The shortened name instead points to how Capitec wants customers to see the group as it expands beyond traditional banking.
