Springboks team named: Rassie Erasmus picks Quan Horn at flyhalf for Barbarians clash

Rassie Erasmus has handed Quan Horn the No 10 jersey for Saturday's Barbarians clash in Gqeberha, while Riley Norton and Carlu Sadie headline a group of emerging players selected alongside established Springbok internationals.

Rassie Erasmus has made an unexpected selection call to open the Springboks’ 2026 international season, naming Quan Horn at flyhalf for Saturday’s clash against the Barbarians in Gqeberha.

Horn, primarily a fullback during his professional career, is set to wear the No 10 jersey in one of the most closely watched positional experiments of the new season.

Riley Norton and Carlu Sadie also feature in a side that blends emerging talent with established Springbok internationals for the fixture at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The match forms part of a double-header that will also see SA ‘A’ face Zimbabwe earlier in the day.

The decision continues Erasmus’ remarkable influence on South African rugby as he balances experienced internationals with players pushing for opportunities at the highest level.

Horn has spent most of his professional career at fullback and wing, making his selection at flyhalf one of the key talking points ahead of the Springboks’ first match of the year.

Erasmus has consistently used non-Test fixtures to broaden South Africa’s player pool.

Saturday’s encounter provides another opportunity to assess new combinations before a demanding international campaign.

Horn will partner Grant Williams in the halfback combination, with a backline packed with international experience around him.

Aphelele Fassi starts at fullback, while Cheslin Kolbe and Edwill van der Merwe occupy the wings. Jesse Kriel and Andre Esterhuizen combine in midfield.

The Springboks’ wider squad evolution continues a pattern of tactical reshaping in key positions, including Kolbe’s return to the back three and Ox Nche’s leadership influence within the forward pack, alongside wider leadership narratives such as Siya Kolisi.

Lock Riley Norton and prop Carlu Sadie will make their first appearances in the starting lineup, while JJ Kotze, Paul de Villiers and Junior Springbok flyhalf Vusi Moyo could earn senior debuts from the bench.

The Springboks’ return to action follows the start of a new international cycle. It comes shortly after the confirmation that Gqeberha will host one of rugby’s most anticipated fixtures of 2026, as the Springboks take on the Barbarians in the newly confirmed ‘YesPlay’ Cup.

Erasmus said the selection reflects the coaching group’s goal of exposing emerging talent to elite international rugby while ensuring experienced players receive valuable game time.

“We said from the outset that we wanted to give a few players returning from injury and others who have been playing overseas game time in this match, while at the same time exposing some of the younger players on our radar to top-class international rugby,” Erasmus said.

Springboks begin crucial 2026 campaign

Saturday’s encounter serves as the first step in a season that will include the Nations Championship and Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.

Erasmus expects the Barbarians to provide a demanding examination despite the non-cap status of the fixture.

The invitational side includes former Springbok fullback Warrick Gelant, who will face several national teammates after accepting an invitation to represent the famous black-and-white jersey.

Gelant is the only South African included in the Barbarians squad and will line up alongside experienced internationals drawn from leading rugby nations.

The Springbok coach believes the diverse make-up of the Barbarians squad presents a unique challenge.

“They have players from all around the world and a quality coaching team.”

“It will be important for us to focus on our game and what we would like to achieve.”

SA ‘A’ also set for Gqeberha test

Earlier in the day, SA ‘A’ will take on Zimbabwe in a fixture designed to strengthen South Africa’s player depth ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Vincent Tshituka captains a side that combines experienced campaigners such as Lukhanyo Am, Boan Venter and Phepsi Buthelezi with several highly rated young prospects.

The fixture will provide another opportunity for the Springbok management team to assess emerging talent as preparations continue for a demanding international cycle.

The teams complete their final preparations in Johannesburg before travelling to Gqeberha for a significant opening weekend of South African rugby.
