Millions of financially vulnerable South Africans can expect an earlier-than-usual Social Relief of Distress (SRD) payout this month, with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) confirming that May 2025 SRD grant payments will be processed from May 23 to May 28.
While the R370 grant is typically paid around the 25th of each month, this month’s date falls on a Sunday—prompting SASSA to bring payments forward. This is welcome relief for over 9.2 million eligible recipients who rely on the grant for essential living costs.
Each month, the Agency channels approximately R20 billion in income support to beneficiaries—”an investment that reaches nearly 19 million families across South Africa,” said SASSA.
“When we roll out the Social Relief of Distress programme, we actively engage with families, communities, and schools to ensure meaningful impact and targeted support.”
How to get paid sooner: 2 recommended methods
To avoid unnecessary delays in accessing your May grant, SASSA urges beneficiaries to use one of these two fastest collection methods:
1. Bank account
Direct deposit into your personal bank account is the fastest and most secure way to receive your SRD grant. Once SASSA processes the payment, funds usually reflect within 2 to 3 working days.
2. Cash Send option
If you don’t have a bank account, you can opt for the Cash Send method. All you need is a valid ID and a cellphone number registered in your name. This method is quick, convenient, and doesn’t require a bank card.
“Beneficiaries can continue to withdraw cash at all Postbank’s partner retail stores and can continue swiping for purchases,” Postbank confirmed in a recent statement.
Other approved collection options
You can also collect your R370 grant at any of the six official SASSA retail partners using your Gold or Black Postbank card:
- Shoprite
- Checkers
- Usave
- Pick n Pay
- Boxer
- Spar

Both the SASSA Gold Card and Postbank Black Card remain fully functional and can be used at ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, and all supported retailers.
Check your payment status
Beneficiaries are advised to check their payment status online between May 23 and 28 to confirm the exact date the grant will reflect in their accounts. You can also dial 0800 60 10 11 and provide your ID number.

Biometric verification now mandatory for new applicants
To combat fraud, new SRD grant applicants must undergo a biometric verification process. Existing beneficiaries do not need to reverify unless instructed by SASSA.
For help with biometric issues, contact the call centre on 0800 60 10 11 or send a WhatsApp to 082 046 8553.
Eligibility criteria for the SRD grant
Applicants must:
- Be South African citizens, permanent residents, or special permit holders
- Be aged 18 to 60
- Earn no more than R624 per month
- Not be receiving UIF, NSFAS, or other social grants
“We support nearly 19 million families through our social grant system. Our work is strengthened by collaboration with various departments—most notably the Department of Health, especially in administering income support through the Disability Grant,” said Matlou.
