Make sure you know your SASSA options in 2025 — how to access all your 8 social grants safely, securely, and without disruption.
SASSA 2025 payment update: What beneficiaries need to know
South Africa’s social grant system is evolving — but there’s no need to panic. Following the South African Reserve Bank’s directive, Postbank has temporarily suspended the rollout of the Black Card. If you have not yet migrated, your Gold Card remains valid and fully operational until further notice.
“Worry not because your Gold SASSA Card will continue to transact until further notice.” — SASSA (April 2025 official pamphlet)
This means you can continue to access your SASSA grant with no disruptions, using either your current Gold Card or through a direct deposit into your personal bank account.
The two official ways to receive your SASSA grant in 2025
SASSA officially recognises two methods to access your grant money:
1. Using your SASSA/Postbank card (gold or black).1.
This method is suitable for beneficiaries who don’t have a personal bank account in South Africa. This means you can use your SASSA Gold or Black Card at all supported ATMs nationwide.
- Gold Cards remain active beyond May 31, 2025.
- Postbank Black Cards are fully functional for those who already have them.
- Temporary suspension: No new Black Cards will be issued for now.
- Where you can use your card:
- All ATMs
- POS (Point-of-Sale) terminals
- 6 official partner retailers (Boxer, Pick n Pay, Spar, Shoprite, Usave, Checkers)
Retailer | Withdraw Cash | Swipe for Purchases |
---|---|---|
Boxer | Yes | Yes |
Pick n Pay | Yes | Yes |
Spar | Yes | Yes |
Shoprite | Yes | Yes |
Usave | Yes | Yes |
Checkers | Yes | Yes |
“Beneficiaries can continue to withdraw cash at all Postbank’s partner retail stores and can continue swiping for purchases,” — Postbank statement.

2. Direct deposit into your personal bank account
With SASSA having discontinued Cash Send services, to ensure secure and efficient monthly grant payments, beneficiaries are encouraged to transition to bank payments as the preferred method for direct payments. This is the most secure and worry-free solution for SASSA grant beneficiaries.
For more convenience and digital access, you can have your SASSA grant paid directly into your bank account.
What you need to bring to update your payment method:
- Proof of your bank account (confirmation letter or recent bank statement).
- A copy of your ID (both sides).
- Proof that your address matches what SASSA has on record.
- The account must be in your name.
Remember: Submit your updated bank details before the 15th of the month to avoid missing your next payment.
Why the Black Card rollout is paused
Due to compliance requirements from the South African Reserve Bank, Postbank has temporarily paused the distribution of new Black Cards to strengthen internal systems and ensure long-term service stability.
“Please note that the issuing of black cards is temporarily placed on hold and card replacement sites are no longer operational.” — SASSA
This decision does not affect:
- Your current Gold Card transactions
- Existing Black Card users
- The ability to access or withdraw your grants
